2015 Free College Football Picks – Week 10 Expert College Football Picks for 11/7/15
No. 16 Florida State Seminoles at No. 1 Clemson Tigers
After playing second fiddle to the Seminoles for what feels like an eternity, the Tigers have a chance to dethrone the kings of the ACC while clearing themselves a path to reach the College Football Playoff. Make no mistake. Clemson’s season will basically be on the line Saturday, and a loss would likely erase any chance of winning its own division, let alone playing for a national title.
In year’s past, this is the type of big stage where Clemson would undoubtedly fall flat, but this team has avoided the dud performance that always seems to torpedo the Tigers’ promising seasons, and they showed enough poise to hang on for a win against Notre Dame. Clemson also has a Heisman candidate in quarterback Deshaun Watson while the Seminoles don’t even know who to play at quarterback. The Tigers also rank in the top five in both offensive and defensive efficiency, and Saturday’s matchup will be in their house. Florida State has managed to hang around all year, but a changing of the guard in the ACC should take place this weekend.
Prediction: Clemson Tigers (-12) Cover the Spread
No. 8 TCU Horned Frogs at No. 14 Oklahoma State Cowboys
If the first round of College Football Playoff rankings have taught us anything it is that the only way a Big 12 team makes the top four is by going undefeated. Two of the conferences three undefeated teams face off in this one in what should be a fast-paced, high-scoring affair. The game also starts a gauntlet stretch for both sides thanks a to a back-loaded Big 12 schedule that will see TCU, Baylor, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State face each other down the stretch of the season.
Led by dual-threat quarterback Trevone Boykin, TCU’s offense currently ranks second in the country in points scored, and it would be easy to assume that the Horned Frogs’ firepower would overpower the Cowboys. That being said, they own just one victory over a team with a winning record, and they have won by a touchdown or less in three of their four road games. Meanwhile, Oklahoma State has been slowing improving after surviving several close games to open conference play. In the end, I expect Boykin and company to make enough plays to pull out the win and cover a manageable spread, but I don’t expect a lopsided TCU win.
Prediction: TCU Horned Frogs (-5) Cover the Spread
No. 2 LSU Tigers at No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide
In what is easily the biggest game of the season thus far, two SEC West rivals an perennial college football powers will face off with plenty on the line. The winner will have a strong case to be the No. 1 team in the next round of College Football Playoff rankings while the loser will likely be on the outside looking in. Not to mention the fact that both teams probably need to win this game just to have a chance of winning the conference title.
Both teams play a physical brand of football and love to dominate in the trenches, and a pair of Heisman contenders will be leading opposing power rushing attacks with Derrick Henry leading the way for Alabama and Leonard Fournette heading LSU’s backfield.
While no one would argue that Fournette is the most dynamic player on the field in this matchup, Alabama’s defensive front is probably the best in the country, and with LSU’s quarterback play consistently being among the worst in the SEC, the Crimson Tide are going to stack the line of scrimmage. LSU isn’t going to be able to just line up and run and beat Alabama, and I don’t think the Tigers have a counterpunch. LSU is averaging just 11.2 points in its last five games against Alabama and hasn’t scored more than 17 points in any of those games. Throw in the fact that this game is in Tuscaloosa, and I just don’t see the one-dimensional Tigers being able to generate enough points against the Crimson Tide defense.
Prediction: Alabama Crimson Tide (-6) Cover the Spread
