2015 Expert College Football Picks: Auburn Tigers Football Predictions, Odds and Team Preview

Offense

Head coach Gus Malzahn and offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee welcome back 5 returning starters from last season. However, a couple of those starters are not expected to start this season due to better talent ahead of them, as senior wide receive Melvin Ray and senior left guard Devonte Danzey appear to likely start the season as buckups this season.

Auburn’s starting quarterback this season will be junior Jeremy Johnson and that should mean that Auburn will go to a more balanced offensive attack instead of the zone-read offense it utilized under departed quarterback Nick Marshall. Johnson doesn’t have a ton of experience but he has looked very good in the limited action he was afforded the past couple seasons. We expect Johnson to break out big time and lead a very strong passing attack for the Tigers this season.

The wide receiving unit appears to be strong this season led by the return of starting senior receiver D’haquille Williams. Williams caught 45 balls for 730 yards and 5 touchdowns last season and should only improve upon those numbers in 2015. Senior wideout Ricardo Louis and sophomore Jason Smith should also be starters in Auburn’s three wideout sets and give Johnson plenty of weapons at his disposal.

Auburn’s running game should be strong with super talented freshman Roc Thomas and the nation’s top junior college transfer, Jovon Robinson, competing to get the bulk of the load if not split the carries. They will be running behind a talented offensive line that only returns two starters but has plenty of talent to make sure Auburn’s passing and run game get the push and time it needs to compete against the top SEC defenses.

Defense

New defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has everyone excited in Auburn and he should have more than enough talent to work with and get Auburn’s defense into the Top 20 nationally this season. Auburn returns 6 starters from last season from a defense that disappointed and finished 10th in the SEC and 62nd nationally in scoring defense.

Muschamp’s first order of business should be getting Auburn’s pass rush fixed as it was horrendous last season. Auburn only registered 10 sacks in it’s eight SEC games last season and that can’t happen again if Auburn wants to compete for the SEC title, beat Alabama and get into the 2016 College Football Playoff. Muschamp plans on bringing in his “Buck” defensive scheme where he plugs in a defensive end/outside linebacker into a spot that he turns loose. That spot should go to junior Carl Lawson who returns after losing last season due to a torn ACL. The addition of Lawson back into the fold should free up talented junior defensive tackle Montravious Adams to wreak havoc and penetrate opposing offense’s up the middle.

More good news for Auburn’s defense this season is the fact that their top three tacklers from last season all return. Junior safety Jonathan Ford, senior middle linebacker Cassanova McKinzy and senior outside linebacker Kris Frost all return to help Muschamp get things back in order defensively for Malzhan. Another big addition for Auburn could be sophomore safety Tray Matthews who brings his super talent to Auburn after being kicked off the team for some off-field problems.

Special Teams

Sophomore place kicker Daniel Carlson returns to handle the field goals and that’s great news for Auburn as he kicked thru 75% of his attempts last season and should only improve. Even better news is the fact that he won’t have to handle punting duties this season too as Auburn has freshman Ian Shannon expected to handle that role.

2015 Auburn Tigers Football Predictions

We absolutely love Gus Malzhan and think he is hands down one of the Top 5 head coaches in the country. Period. Now that he has the brilliance of defensive coordinator Will Muschamp to handle the defense he should be able to concentrate totally on offense and that is scary for the rest of the SEC and especially Nick Saban and Alabama fans. We expect Auburn and Alabama to battle for the SEC West title and we expect both teams to be two of the Top 4 teams in the nation and make the College Football Playoff no matter who wins the SEC West. We look for Auburn to definitely go OVER their posted 8 wins over/under odds so we strongly encourage a bet on Auburn at OVER 8 wins -165.
