2015 College Football Predictions – Playoff Contenders Stock Report: Week 7
Stock Up
While Northwestern may have been a bit overrated, the Michigan Wolverines certainly looked impressive in their beatdown of the Wildcats. The Wolverines already look like a prototypical Jim Harbaugh team after just a handful of games, wearing down opponents with a power ground game and physical defense. The team appears to have a confidence that has been missing in recent years, and the Wolverines are a legit contender in a Big Ten conference where top dogs Ohio State and Michigan State have looked very beatable.
It certainly wasn’t easy, but the TCU Horned Frogs survived a road game against an upset-minded Kansas State team to remain undefeated and in prime position to claim a spot in the College Football Playoff. With QB Trevone Boykin and WR Josh Docston leading a high-powered offense, TCU can put up points in the blink of an eye. Kansas State was one of the biggest hurdles for Boykin and company, and they cleared it.
Nobody would have been surprised if they Clemson Tigers followed up their big win over Notre Dame by laying an egg against Georgia Tech. Instead, they did quite the opposite and clobbered the Yellow Jackets. A home game against Florida State still looms, but this Clemson team is starting to look like the group that won’t give away a shot at a championship with an ugly loss.
Stock Down
Yes, rivalry games are always unpredictable, but it was downright shocking that the Oklahoma Sooners lost to a Texas team that hasn’t been able to get out of its own way all season. The Longhorns may still have name recognition, but as poorly as Charlie Strong’s bunch was playing, Oklahoma’s loss was inexcusable and about as bad a loss as any highly-ranked team has suffered. The defeat has basically eliminated the Sooners from the national title picture.
It was a rough week for the USC Trojans. A loss to Washington was their second of the season, and barring a miracle, they will be lucky to have a shot at the Pac-12 title, let alone a spot in the College Football Playoff. Throw in the drama surrounding the firing of head coach Steve Sarkisian, and the USC program is in a bad spot right now.
On the plus side, the Florida Gators knocked off Missouri in Week 6 to remain undefeated and continue a resurgent season. However, QB Will Grier was suspended for the year after testing positive for a banned substance. He plans to appeal, but even if he wins, it might too late for the Gators. Grier has given an offense that has been nonexistent the last few years some life, and without him, Florida could be in serious trouble.
In the blink of an eye, another promising season for the Georgia Bulldogs is over. An ugly loss to Alabama was followed by a loss to Tennessee in Week 6, and star RB Nick Chubb was lost for the year in the process. Even if the Bulldogs rally and get the help they need to win the SEC East, the Bulldogs are now out of the conversation for a spot in the College Football Playoff.
