2015 College Football Predictions – Playoff Contenders Stock Report: Week 12
Stock Up
As if their resume needed boosting, the Alabama Crimson Tide went on the road and dismantled a ranked Mississippi State team 31-6 in Week 11. Nick Saban’s bunch actually has one of the worst losses among the title contenders, but with so many convincing wins over ranked opponents, the loss to Ole Miss is just a blip on the radar at this point. If Alabama wins out, they will be back in the College Football Playoff.
The battle for the Big 12 title gets more interesting by the week, and after the Oklahoma Sooners went on the road and took down the previously undefeated Baylor Bears, Bob Stoops’ bunch is suddenly a real threat to make the College Football Playoff. Their loss to a terrible Texas teams isn’t going away, but if they take care of business against ranked opponents TCU and Oklahoma State over the coming weeks, they will make a strong case among the one-loss teams.
In a battle between non-Power 5 teams, the Houston Cougars used a late rally to knock off the Memphis Tigers 35-34 and stake their claim for a spot in a major bowl. The Cougars’ offense remains potent, and with a matchup against a ranked Navy team looming and a potential meeting with Temple in the conference title, Houston could add two more impressive wins to its resume. Knocking of Memphis was a big first step, and the Cougars now have a real shot to play in a big bowl.
Stock Down
For the second year in a row, it looks like the high-scoring Baylor Bears are going to miss out on a spot in the College Football Playoff. No, a loss to Oklahoma isn’t a bad loss by any means, but the selection committee had already made it clear that it didn’t value the Big 12 as much as the other major conferences. Now, the Bears missed out on one of their few chances to secure a signature win. At this point, the Bears are likely left to play the role of spoiler.
It appeared that the Stanford Cardinal had overcome their surprising loss to Northwestern to open the year and were in prime position to compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff, but then came a shocking loss to Oregon in Week 11. Ironically, Stanford had been a thorn in the side of the dominant Oregon teams of recent years, but this time around, it was the Cardinal being upset by a mediocre Ducks squad. With two losses, Stanford’s national title hopes are finished.
One week after a loss to Alabama put their College Football Playoff hopes in jeopardy, the LSU Tigers watched their season go up in flames with an ugly 31-14 loss at home to Arkansas. The Tigers still have a few chances to earn signature wins in the loaded SEC, but with two losses, the Tigers would need a miracle to climb back into contention in both their conference and the College Football Playoff picture.
