2015 College Football Picks & Predictions – Heisman Rankings Stock Report: Week 11: Week 10 of the college football season featured several big games, and it is only fitting that the Heisman Trophy race endured a bit of a shakeup by the time the dust had settled. Entering the weekend, TCU QB Trevone Boykin and LSY RB Leonard Fournette had created some distance between themselves and the other Heisman candidates, but after both players faltered in losses, that gap is gone and the Heisman Trophy race is suddenly wide open. With that in mind, here is a closer look at how the Heisman race stacks up heading into Week 11. 2015 College Football Picks & Predictions – Heisman Rankings Stock Report: Week 11
Stock Up
In a battle of teams positioned to play in the College Football Playoff, Alabama RB Derrick Henry delivered a monster performance. The bruising back carried the ball 38 times, finishing with 210 yards and three scores as the Crimson Tide controlled the pace and wore down rival LSU. He has now scored a touchdown in every game this season, and he has scored multiple times in three straight. Henry has also topped 200 yards in both of Alabama’s matchups against teams ranked in the top 10. He has to be considered one of the favorites for the Heisman after his latest performance.
With a chance to take control of the ACC and further cement their status as a national title contender, the Clemson Tigers got a rock solid performance from QB Deshaun Watson. Granted, he only accounted for one touchdown, but he threw for 297 yards and ran for 107 while not committing a turnover in a victory of Florida State. Watson’s numbers are all trending up in recent weeks, and if he can help the Tigers stay perfect, he is going to be in the Heisman conversation.
His versatility was taken to another level in Stanford’s most-recent victory as RB Christian McCaffrey threw a 28-yard touchdown pass in addition to rushing for 147 yards. He has now topped 100 yards rushing in seven straight games, and he has topped 100 yards from scrimmage in every game aside from the opener, and he also returns kicks. McCaffrey has become Stanford’s most dynamic weapon, and as the Cardinal continue to climb back into the College Football Playoff picture, he has a chance to make a push down the stretch of the season.
It doesn’t matter who is throwing the ball, Baylor WR Corey Coleman is going to make big plays. His latest performance in a big road win over Kansas State saw Coleman haul in 11 passes for 216 yards and two scores despite the Bears missing their starting quarterback. Coleman now ranks third in the country with 1,178 yards on the year, and his 20 touchdowns are six more than any other receiver. Sure, Baylor’s offense may inflate his numbers, but if he continues to deliver during a brutal closing stretch for the Bears, his numbers are going to be impossible to ignore.
Stock Down
If not for an 18-yard run after the game was out of reach, LSU RB Leonard Fournette would have finished with less than a yard per carry. Even with one decent run, he still finished with 19 carries for just 31 yards, averaging a still-awful 1.6 yards per rush. Facing Alabama’s loaded front with no passing game to keep the Crimson Tide honest, the rough game is understandable. However, a big performance in a win could have made Fournette the unquestioned frontrunner for the Heisman. Instead, being a non-factor in a loss has created a wide-open race.
It is hard to knock a guy that threw for 445 yards, but TCU QB Trevone Boykin also tossed four costly interceptions as the Horned Frogs were blown out by Oklahoma State. TCU’s perfect record and title hopes are now dead, and while Boykin is still firmly in the Heisman conversation, the gap he had created between himself and much of the competition has been erased.
