2015 College Football Picks – Heisman Rankings Stock Report – Week 7: The 2015 college football season is approaching its midway point, and while the Heisman Trophy is still very much up for grabs, there are certainly a few players that are putting themselves at the top of the conversation. More importantly, there are several players that have already played themselves out of consideration. With that in mind, here is a look at the Heisman contenders that are rising and those that have taken a step back heading into Week 7 of the college football season.
2015 College Football Picks – Heisman Rankings Stock Report: Week 7
Stock Up
TCU’s defense has been gashed on multiple occasions this year, but it won’t matter how many points the Horned Frogs give up if QB Trevone Boykin continues to be a one-man wrecking crew on offense. The dual-threat weapon threw for 301 yards and two scores and ran for 124 yards and two scores in a 52-45 road win over Kansas State. In the final minutes alone, Boykin gave TCU the lead with a 69-yard touchdown run, and after the Wildcats tied things up, he threw a 55-yard touchdown pass that was ultimately the difference in the game.
The surprising Utah Utes continue to make a run at a spot in the College Football Playoff, and RB Devontae Booker has been the driving force of the offense. Against California in Week 6, he ran for 222 yards and two scores in the Utah’s closest game to date. He has now accounted for 859 yards of offense in just five games this year.
It certainly wasn’t LSU’s toughest game to date, but RB Leonard Fournette once again delivered, rushing for 158 yards, including an 87-yard score that broke things open, to bring his season total to 1,022 in just five games. Needless to say, Fournette is the leading rusher in the country, and he also found the end zone 12 times. For a Tigers team that still can’t really throw the ball, he has proven to be arguably the best and the most important player in college football. That combination is certainly a recipe for hoisting the Heisman at the end of the year.
One week after suffering a hamstring injury and missing most of the game, Florida State RB Dalvin Cook returned to lead the Seminoles to a victory over rival Miami. He ran for 222 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns, and he added three catches for 47 yards and another score. Cook is up to 792 rushing yards and eight scores despite playing barely more than four games, and he is the main reason FSU is quietly sitting 5-0 on the young season.
Stock Down
He has been touted as the best quarterback prospect in the country, but California’s Jared Goff had a miserable performance on a big stage. Facing a highly-ranked Utah team, he completed just 53.2 percent of his passes and tossed five interceptions. Needless to say, he likely gave away any chance of building steam for a legit a Heisman push.
Through no fault of his own, Georgia RB Nick Chubb saw his Heisman chances come to an end in Week 6 when he suffered a gruesome leg injury on his first carry. To rub salt in the wound, the Bulldogs went on to lose the game. Chubb’s streak of 100-yard games obviously ended, but at this point, his Heisman hopes take a backseat to his recovery.
With all the drama surrounding head coach Steve Sarkisian, it is easy to forget how terrible QB Cody Kessler looked in a surprise loss to Washington in Week 6. He finished with just 156 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. With two losses for USC and dud of a performance for Kessler, a Heisman run seems next to impossible at this point.
