2015 College Football Picks – Heisman Rankings Stock Report: Week 12: The 2015 college football season is hitting its home stretch, and while teams continue to battle for a spot in the College Football Playoff, the Heisman Trophy race has turned into one of the most wide-open races in recent memory. An injury to TCU QB Trevone Boykin has played a part in leveling the playing field, but it seems like in recent weeks, one or two of the top contenders seem to struggle and open the door for more candidates. With several big games on tap in Week 12, another shuffling of the Heisman contenders could be on tap this weekend. In the meantime, here is a closer look at the Heisman Trophy contenders that boosted their stock last weekend and those that likely took a hit in the eyes of voters. Check out today’s top college football picks against the spread from NSAwins.com’s top handicappers.
2015 College Football Picks – Heisman Rankings Stock Report: Week 12
Stock Up
Alabama RB Derrick Henry rolled over another ranked opponent in Week 11, rushing 22 times for 204 yards and two touchdowns in a road win over Mississippi State. It was the third time in the last four games that Henry has topped 200 yards and his fourth straight game with multiple touchdowns. He has scored at least one touchdown in every game this year, and his punishing running style helps give the Crimson Tide team its identity as a physically dominant team. If he isn’t the outright frontrunner, Henry is at least on the short list of favorites.
In one of the biggest games of the weekend, Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield came up big in a win over Baylor. He threw for 270 yards and three touchdowns, and he ran for 76 yards and another score. Mayfield has now thrown for more than 3,000 yards and has 31 touchdowns compared to just five interceptions, and he has six scores on the ground. With statement game against TCU and Oklahoma State remaining, Mayfield could continue to force his way into the Heisman conversation.
He has been flying under the radar, but RB Ezekiel Elliott has been the pillar of consistency for an Ohio State offense that has struggled to find the right quarterback. Elliott has topped 100 yards in every game this year, and he has scored at least one touchdown in nine of the 10 games the Buckeyes have played. His 181 yards and two scores helped Ohio State get past Illinois in Week 11, and if Elliott keeps on rolling against Michigan State and Michigan the next two weeks, a Heisman Trophy could be in his future.
Stock Down
His rough outing against Alabama brought him back to the back, and a lackluster outing from LSU RB Leonard Fournette has left the former frontrunner with some serious work to do in the closing weeks if he wants to win the Heisman Trophy. He failed to reach 100 yards for the second straight game in LSU’s loss to Arkansas, and even if he rips off a few 200-yard games to end the season, he will likely need some other frontrunners to have poor performances to have a chance of being more than just a finalist.
Facing Oklahoma in Baylor’s biggest game of the season, WR Corey Coleman picked the worst possible time to have his worst game. He recorded season lows in catches and yards, hauling in just three passes for 51 yards. He also failed to find the end zone for the first time all year. Coleman has some big games left to try to make up ground, but it is hard enough for receivers to win the Heisman, and coming up small on such a big stage won’t help his cause.
