2015 College Football Bowl Picks: St. Petersburg Bowl, Sun Bowl, Heart of Dallas Bowl, Pinstripe Bowl, Independence Bowl and Foster Farms Bowl – Free College Football Picks 12/26/2015
St. Petersburg Bowl: Connecticut Huskies vs. Marshall Thundering Herd
The Huskies defense is legit. They are allowing just 19.8 points per game, and they shut down the powerful offense of a previously unbeaten Houston team late in the year, albeit with the Cougars missing their starting quarterback. Unfortunately for Connecticut, the team’s offense has struggled all season, and Marshall’s experienced defense has amassed 27 takeaways and has routinely held opponents under 20 points. The Thundering Herd will quiet the Huskies’ offense and put enough points on the board to win the game.
Prediction: Marshall Thundering Herd (-5) Cover the Spread
Hyundai Sun Bowl: Miami Hurricanes vs. Washington State Cougars
Before the Mark Richt era begins in Miami, the Hurricanes have to take on the high-powered passing attack of Washington State. The Cougars are expected to have star quarterback Luke Falk leading an air attack that leads the country in passing yards, and despite an experienced secondary, Miami has struggled to contain teams that can throw the ball. In fact, the Hurricanes allowed over 50 points to both Clemson and North Carolina. Miami’s offense isn’t bad, but look for the Cougars to come out on top in a higher-scoring game.
Prediction: Washington State Cougars (-3) Cougars Cover the Spread
Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl: Washington Huskies vs. Southern Miss Golden Eagles
This matchup is a classic strength-on-strength battle between Washington’s stout defense and the high-powered offense of Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles have a 4,000-yard passer and a pair of 1,000-yard rushers, but the Huskies rank 12th nationally points allowed and 28th in yards allowed. More importantly, the Golden Eagles’ offense has been ground against tougher competition, scoring just 10 against Marshall and 16 against Mississippi. Southern Miss has also struggled to slow down offenses of tougher opponents, and all four of the team’s losses have come to bowl-eligible teams. Washington’s defense will carry the Huskies to a comfortable win.
Prediction: Washington Huskies (-8.5) Cover the Spread
New Era Pinstripe Bowl: Indiana Hoosiers vs. Duke Blue Devils
In many ways, these teams are mirror images of each other. Both are middle-of-the-road teams in their conferences, and both have taken some tough teams to the breaking point, only to lose in heartbreaking fashion. The tipping point for this game could be the health of Indiana running back Jordan Howard, who is questionable with a knee injury. With Howard likely less than 100 percent, if he plays at all, take the points at Duke. Don’t forget that the Blue Devils are playing in their fourth straight bowl game while Indiana is playing in its first bowl since 2007, so the Hoosiers aren’t exactly familiar with this type of stage.
Prediction: Duke Blue Devils (+3) Cover the Spread
Camping World Independence Bowl: Tulsa Golden Hurricane vs. Virginia Tech Hokies
Both these teams used late-season rallies to gain bowl eligibility, but are flawed teams. Tulsa has a potent offense, but the team’s defense has been absolutely atrocious, allowing 38.6 points per game. The Hokies have a stingy defense, but they have really struggled to score. The problem for the Golden Hurricanes is that their passing attack is going to have issues generating points against a Hokies defense that hasn’t allowed a 100-yard receiver all season, and Tulsa’s defense simply can’t be counted on, even against a weak offense.
Prediction: Virginia Tech Hokies (-14) Cover the Spread
Foster Farms Bowl: UCLA Bruins vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers
While it is easy to dismiss a Nebraska team that is playing in a bowl game despite winning just five games, the Cornhuskers have played a ton of close games. All seven of their losses have come by 10 points or less, including five by five points or less. Nebraska also beat Michigan State earlier this year. On the other hand, UCLA has been painfully inconsistent on both sides of the ball. With a proven ability to play close game, take Nebraska and the points.
Prediction: Nebraska Cornhuskers (+6.5) Cover the Spread
