With just a game or two remaining for most teams, Saturday’s game will also have major implications for both conference titles and even the college football playoff. With that in mind, here is a closer look at some of the headline games for Week 14.
No. 16 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at No. 9 Georgia Bulldogs
This out-of-conference showdown is all about in-state bragging rights, and while the Yellow Jackets already know they will be playing in the ACC title game, the Bulldogs are hoping they can sneak into the SEC title game courtesy of a Missouri loss. In the meantime, two excellent rushing attacks will square off, and although both sides have suffered inexplicable losses this year, the Bulldogs look to be in good shape in this matchup. Not only has the Bulldogs’ defense been the more consistent unit in this matchup, but Georgia’s offensive line will have a big size advantage in the trenches. In the end, the Bulldogs’ overall edge in physicality and home-field advantage should be enough.

No. 4 Mississippi State Bulldogs at No. 19 Ole Miss Rebels
A few weeks ago, the Egg Bowl was shaping up to be a playoff game in its own right, but recent losses by both sides have dramatically changed the picture. The Bulldogs are trying to hang on to the final spot in the college football playoff, and Saturday’s game is likely their last chance to do so unless Alabama falls in the Iron Bowl. Meanwhile, the Rebels are simply trying to ruin the title dreams of their rival after three losses in four games has derailed a once promising season.
On one hand, the Rebels have one of the best home-field advantages in the country, but crowd noise alone can’t fix a team that is struggling on both sides of the ball. Ole Miss is coming off an ugly 30-0 loss to an Arkansas team that has just two SEC wins all year. Meanwhile, the once vaunted Ole Miss defense has allowed a combined 65 points in the team’s last two losses. To top it off, Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott has proven to be exponentially more clutch than Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace, and in the end, the Bulldogs should be able to avoid an upset in the Egg Bowl.

No. 18 Minnesota Golden Gophers at No. 14 Wisconsin Badgers
The battle for Paul Bunyan’s axe will decide the Big Ten West Division so there is plenty at stake in this one. The game also features two of the best backs in the country as Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon faces off against Minnesota’s David Cobb. Granted, Cobb is considered questionable with a hamstring issue, but even if he suits up, the Golden Gophers are likely in trouble. Both teams are one dimensional on offense, but Wisconsin’s defense has been one of the best in the country, especially at stopping the run. The Badgers will also be playing in Madison where few opponents emerge victorious. Given Minnesota credit for getting in position to win its division, but Gordon and company should win this game going away.

No. 15 Auburn Tigers at No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide
Last year, four missed field goals, including one that was returned 109 yards for the game-winning touchdown ended Alabama’s chances at a three-peat and vaulted Auburn into the SEC title game and eventually the BCS title game. This time around, the Crimson Tide are the only team with national title aspirations, but that doesn’t mean the intensity level will be any less. After all, the Iron Bowl is one of the fiercest rivalries in football.
While Auburn will be focused on ruining the title hopes of its rival, the fact is that the Tigers have simply been bad on the defensive side of the ball for most of the year. They limp into this matchup with a 3-3 record in their last six games, and going on the road to face an Alabama offense that is averaging more than 500 yards at home isn’t going to help Auburn’s defensive issues. Alabama, on the other hand, has one of the stingiest defenses in the country, and with plenty of motivation, especially after last season, the Crimson Tide are going to be on a mission in Tuscaloosa Saturday.
