2013 Heisman Trophy Odds and Predictions: Vegas Favorites and Top Challengers: Practices are in full swing and the 2013 college football season is fast approaching. Of course, one of the most debated and discussed topics before, during and after the season is always the Heisman Trophy winner, especially with all many of the traditional unwritten rules being defied in recent years. From sophomores, junior college transfers and even a freshman winning to defensive players consistently cracking the top five, the Heisman Trophy race is becoming more wide open than ever before. With that in mind, here is a look at the top contenders for the Heisman Trophy heading into the 2013 college football season.
The Frontrunners
While he hasn’t exactly been smooth off the field, defending Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel can do just about everything on it. All the quarterback did last year was throw for 3,706 yards, run 1,410 yards, account for 47 touchdowns and lead Texas A&M to a win over top-ranked Alabama en route to becoming the first freshman to win the award. With his ability to pile up numbers and make highlight-reel plays on a weekly basis, Manziel could be just a couple of big SEC wins away from a repeat.
With probation keeping Ohio State out of what would have been an appearance in the BCS Championship, Braxton Miller basically got dismissed as a candidate for the Heisman Trophy. Well, the dual-threat QB is back to run the show for a Buckeyes’ team that has even more weapons surrounding him and has a great chance to go undefeated once again. With his speed and strength, Miller topped 2,000 yards through the air and added more than 1,200 on the ground to go along with 28 scores. If he repeats or tops those numbers and has the Buckeyes in the national title hunt, the Heisman could be headed his way.
The Other Favorites
Charles Woodson is the last defensive player to win the Heisman, but South Carolina’s Jadeveon Clowney could change that this year. Coming off a season when he recorded 13.0 sacks and 23.5 tackles for loss, he is already entrenched as the top pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. More importantly, his near-decapitation of a Michigan running back in the Gamecocks’ bowl game showed the country just what a beast he is on the field. If Clowney continues to terrorize opposing QBs and blowup runners in the backfield, he might just have enough hype to bring home the Heisman Trophy.
Lost in Alabama’s dominance of the college football world has been the steadily-improving play of quarterback A.J. McCarron. In addition to guiding the Crimson Tide to a second-straight national title, he led the country in passing efficiency last year. While Alabama will always be a power running team at heart, McCarron numbers should continue their upward trend this year. Plus, it is going to be tough for voters to ignore him if he leads the Crimson Tide to a third-straight appearance in the BCS Championship.
He already has more than 10,000 passing yards and 95 touchdowns on his resume, and Georgia QB Aaron Murray will like own just about every SEC passing record by the time this season is over. In other words, numbers won’t be the issue. For Murray, his Heisman campaign comes down to whether or not he can lead the Bulldogs to big victories in big games. He had a near miss in Georgia’s loss in the SEC title game to Alabama last year, and if he can reverse the result this year, his resume will truly become Heisman worthy.
