2012 College Football Predictions: Oklahoma Sooners BCS Odds, Schedule and Preview

2012 Oklahoma Sooners College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Oklahoma College Football Preview: Last year, the Oklahoma Sooners started the year ranked No. 1 country, but despite a Heisman candidate a quarterback, one of the most productive receivers in college football history and a ton of returning starters, Bob Stoops’ crew couldn’t hold on to the top spot. In fact, the Sooners didn’t even win the Big 12. Injuries and inconsistent play ruined what was supposed to be a championship season, but Oklahoma is fortunate enough to get a second shot. The roster is once again loaded with talent, and with Stoops’ track record of rebounding from bad seasons, the Sooners could deliver a title to Norman one year later than many expected.

After struggling down the stretch, quarterback Landry Jones is back to lead the pass-happy offensive system. Jones can throw for 4,000 yards and 30-plus touchdowns in his sleep, and even in a down season, Oklahoma ranked 10th in the country in points per game and had the fourth-best passing attack. With two talented, experienced receivers in Kenny Stills and Jaz Reynolds to throw to and four starters back on an offensive line that allowed just 11 sacks in almost 600 pass attempts, Jones and company should only improve on their numbers from last season. The return of running back Dominique Whaley form injury should provide enough balance to keep opposing defenses honest, as well. Add it up, and the Sooners should have a championship-caliber offense to say the least.

While Jones and the offense had their problems at times, the Sooners’ defense was the unit that failed in big games. Oklahoma actually had the top-scoring defense in the Big 12, but the Sooners allowed at least 41 points in their three losses. The defense simply didn’t get the job done in big games, and that will have to change this year for the Sooners to run the table. A secondary that returns all four starters, including shutdown corner Demontre Hurst, should go a long way to fixing the problems. The defensive front is still a work in progress, and there is no true start along the defensive line. That being said, there are plenty of upperclassmen back with starting experience. The Sooners may not have an elite front seven, but at the same time, the group shouldn’t be a glaring weakness either.

Looking at the schedule, Stoops and company have to be thinking about an undefeated regular season. Notre Dame is the only out-of-conference opponent that might pose a threat, and the Fighting Irish are coming to Norman. Oklahoma also has home games against a Texas team that is still rebuilding, a Baylor squad missing its Heisman-winning quarterback, and an Oklahoma State bunch that is missing its two-best offensive weapons from a year ago. Two of the four road games the Sooners face come against bottom feeders, and the other two away contests come against West Virginia and TCU. While both the Mountaineers and Horned Frogs are talented, both programs will also be adjusting to life in their first season as part of the Big 12.

Stoops failed to lead his Sooners to a Big 12 title for just the sixth time in his career last year. Oklahoma is a combined 50-8 in the five previous seasons in which it did not win the conference crown. Needless to say, a big year is practically a given, and with as much talent as they Sooners have on offense, a special year could be on tap. Sure, Stoops has had some serious issues winning BCS bowls, including national title games, but there is also something to be said about getting Oklahoma in position to contend for the ultimate prize on a regular basis. A Big 12 title should be a lock, and an undefeated seasons is definitely manageable.
