2011 TCU Football Predictions, Odds, Picks and Schedule – 2011 TCU Horned Frogs NCAA Football Preview

2011 TCU College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – TCU Horned Frogs NCAA Football Preview: To say least year was a dream season for TCT would be an understatement. The Horned Frogs went undefeated during the regular season and knocked off heavily-favored Wisconsin to win the Rose Bowl. The victory thrust the school’s football program into the national spotlight, showing off Texas’ best kept college football secret. The fact is that Gary Patterson is 98-28 in six seasons at TCU, and since 2008, only the Longhorns have sent more players to the NFL from the state of Texas. The program is an emerging national power, and while TCU will really get a chance to show its stuff in 2012 when the school joins the Big East, Patterson’s bunch will try to crash the BCS one last time in 2011-12 as a member of the Mountain West.

Defense has been the strength of this program in recent years, and last year was a prime example. The Horned Frogs gave up the fewest points in the nation in 2010-11, and finished the year with the best scoring differential in the nation. While not all the members of last year’s record-setting unit are back, enough of the pieces are still in place for the TCU defense to be a force. The defensive line and secondary will both have some new parts, but the linebacking core is as good as it gets. Tank Carder and Tanner Brock are both tackling machines, and they will carry the load while the newcomers get adjusted to their starting roles.

As good as the defense will be this season, TCU has to score points in order to win games. If the Horned Frogs are going to run the table again this year, they will have to do so without quarterback Andy Dalton. Dalton was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in April after four strong seasons under center for TCU. His accuracy as a passer, poise in the pocket, and his leadership will all be missed. Casey Pachall will be charged with replacing Dalton, and while he has a stronger arm and more athleticism, it is going to take some time before he understands and runs the offense as efficiently as Dalton did. However, Pachall is going to be given the reins of a powerful offense that can do plenty of damage on the ground and through the air.

Leading the rushing attack will be junior Ed Wesley. Last year, he helped the Horned Frogs score 41 touchdowns on the ground. For the record, their opponents scored just nine rushing TDs last season. Josh Boyce will likely be the team’s top receiver, but TCU also welcomes three highly-touted recruits into the mix this season. In terms of talent, this current group of skill position players could be the best the Horned Frogs have ever had. The only question will be how long it takes the young players to adjust to the college game.

The Horned Frogs’ one-year stop in the Mountain West doesn’t come with the easiest conference, especially out of the gate. TCU opens the year on the road against Baylor and stays on the road the next weekend against Air Force. Both teams went to bowl games last season and possess potent offenses. Later in the year, two games stand out. The Horned Frogs will host BYU in late October, and on November 12, they will travel to Boise State for one of the most anticipated matchups of the year. TCU and the Broncos have been the two most successful programs outside of the major conferences, crashing the BCS and being in the mix for national titles.

Despite the tough early season road tests, the Horned Frogs should be able to handle both Baylor and Air Force thanks to their powerful defense. BYU returns a bunch of starters on offense and will likely hang tough with TCU, but in the end, playing at home will help the Horned Frogs pull out a close one. The showdown against Boise State is the red flag on the schedule. Beating the Broncos isn’t easy, and beating them at home is next to impossible. Boise State hasn’t lost on its famous blue turf since 2001. With a first-year starter under center, TCU is going to have trouble snapping the Broncos’ 63-game home winning streak. Even with a loss, the Horned Frogs should be in the mix for an at-large BCS bid. However, there won’t be any national title talk without a perfect record.
