2011 Oregon State College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Oregon St NCAA Football Preview: Entering the 2010-11 season, the Oregon State football program was on the verge of becoming a PAC-10 power. Hopes were high as Jacquizz and James Rodgers were expected to lead a high-powered offense, but an injury to James derailed the Beavers’ season before it could get off the ground. Jacquizz is now in the NFL, leaving James to carry the load for a team looking to rebound and return to the postseason after limping to a 5-7 record last season. Having the experienced Mike Riley as coach will help, but the 2011-12 outlook is somewhat cloudy for an otherwise inexperienced team in the newly formed PAC-12.
The progression of quarterback Ryan Katz will go a long way to determining the success of the Beavers this season. He looked impressive at times last season, tossing 18 touchdowns and showing plenty of arm strength to stretch the field. However, he also struggled with his decision making, especially against the top teams in the conference. He threw six combined interceptions against Stanford and Oregon, accounting for more than half of his season total. Unless he can figure out how to handle the better defensive units, the ceiling for Oregon State is severely limited.
With Jacquizz Rodgers departure, the Beavers will have to find a way to replace more than 1,400 rushing yards and an incredible 21 touchdowns. Assuming his brother James returns to form following his injury, he should provide plenty of offense in the passing game and on the ground. In his last full season, he tallied more than 1,300 totals yards and 10 scores. As the centerpiece of the offense, his numbers will be even more impressive in 2011-12. Markus Wheaton will be the other option for the Beavers, and he will get his share of carries and catches as well in Riley’s offensive system.
While Oregon State has the weapons to replace Jacquizz Rodgers, the same cannot be said on the defensive side of the ball where the Beavers lost a pair of stars to the NFL. Defensive linemen Stephen Paea and Gabe Miller will leave big shoes to fill, especially Paea who was named the top lineman in the conference last season. Oregon State loses two of its three starters at linebacker as well. Even with the star power, the beavers gave up more than 400 yards of offense per game to opponents last year. Safety Lance Mitchell will be the likely leader, but it is hard to imagine this inexperienced unit fairing any better than last year’s group did.
No one can accuse the Beavers of attempting to pad their record with their out-of-conference schedule. After the opener against Sacramento State, the Beavers travel to Madison to take on the Wisconsin Badgers. Not to mention that a home game against BYU is lurking later in the year. The schedule also includes road games against conference title contenders Arizona State, Utah and rival Oregon. Home games against Stanford and Arizona won’t be a walk in the park either. There simply aren’t many easy opponents in the offensive-minded PAC-12.
Much like Jacquizz last season, James Rodgers will likely put up plenty of highlights while the Beavers struggle as a whole. The offense in general should be more than adequate, but the young defense is going to have a tough time slowing down opponents. The PAC-12 is known for its high-scoring games, and teams will likely be putting up plenty against Oregon State in 2011-12. Riley’s team will have some encouraging moments, but a trip to a bowl game is far from a sure thing. The Beavers are rebuilding, and it will show on the field this season.
