2011 Oklahoma St Cowboys College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Oklahoma St Cowboys NCAA Football Preview: The 2010-11 season was a memorable one for Oklahoma State. For the first time in school history, the Cowboys won 11 games. They also gave conference juggernaut Oklahoma a real run for its money in the regular season finale, ultimately falling 47-41. Still, an 11-2 mark and a trip to the Cotton Bowl was a big step forward for a program trying to reach the next level and become one of the elite teams in the nation.
Oklahoma State has a chance to accomplish that goal this season. After all, eleven starters return for an offense that ranked third in the nation last season in terms of point scored, notching more than 40 a game and piling up more than 500 yards of offense. Among the returnees are quarterback Brandon Weeden and wide receiver Justin Blackmon. Weeden was one of just three QBs that topped 4,000 passing yards last season, and Blackmon captured the Biletnikoff award after tallying more than 1,700 yards and a NCAA best 20 touchdowns.
The entire offensive line returns for the Cowboys as well, and it is pretty obvious that this team is going to put up some serious points. In fact, Mike Gundy’s team is likely to be one of the top offenses in the nation when all is said and done. If Oklahoma State struggles in 2011-12, it won’t be because of a lack of points.
Stopping opponents could be another story. The Cowboys’ secondary is back, but the front seven will have five new starters this year. The Big 12 is a conference loaded with high-powered offenses, and Oklahoma State isn’t the only school that light up the scoreboard. As the Cowboys learned last season against Oklahoma, it is definitely possible to score 40 points and still lose a game. Opponents will be looking to spread out the inexperienced linebackers and defensive linemen for the Cowboys all year long.
The bottom line is that Oklahoma State is built to score points, regardless of the opponent. However, a sketchy defense is going to force the offense to be nearly flawless this season. Shootouts will likely be a weekly standard for the Cowboys, which will put them at risk to lose to almost any opponent.
Looking at the schedule, a road game against Texas A&M and a home game against the Sooners to end the regular season appear to be the likely stumbling blocks. The Aggies return almost every starter from a year ago and were playing great at the end of last season. A&M has the right combination of defense and offense to give the Cowboys trouble. Meanwhile, Oklahoma is favored to win the national title and the Big 12 title by most experts. As with any rivalry game, the showdown against the Sooners could go either way, but the talent edge lies with Bob Stoops and company.
Oklahoma State should manage to double-digit wins once again in 2011-12, but a conference title and a BCS bid will likely remain out of reach. Led by Weeden and Blackmon, the Cowboys will be a highlight reel on offense, while the defense will give up its share of big plays. At the end of the day, this team just doesn’t have enough to knock off the big boys of the Big 12.
