2011 Oklahoma Sooners Football Predictions, Odds, Picks and Schedule – 2011 Oklahoma NCAA Football Preview

2011 Oklahoma Sooners College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Oklahoma NCAA Football Preview: When you return 18 starters from a team that went 12-2, won the Big 12 title and won the Fiesta Bowl, you are going to be in the national title discussion. That is exactly the situation the Oklahoma Sooners find themselves in heading into the 2011-12 season. Bob Stoops welcomes back a loaded roster that includes Heisman Trophy candidates at quarterback and wide receiver, and anything less than a trip to the BCS Championship for the Sooners this year is going to be a disappointment.

Nine starters are back for an offense that approached 40 points a game last year, and putting up points shouldn’t be a problem for the Sooners this season either.  Junior quarterback Landry Jones is back under center, coming off a ridiculous 4,700-yard, 38-touchdown campaign. It is scary to think what another year of experience will do for Jones, but 5,000 yards and 40-plus touchdowns seem within reach. If that happens, Oklahoma could be hoisting a national title trophy, and Jones could be doing the same with the Heisman.

Jones has his No. 1 target back in the mix as well in wide receiver Ryan Broyles. He finished last season with more than 1,600 yards and caught 16 touchdowns for a passing attack that ranked third in the nation. Broyles will be joined by Kenny Stills and Trey Metoye. Stills had nearly 800 receiving yards last season, while Metoye comes to the Sooners as the No. 1 rated wide receiver recruit out of high school.

The only question mark on offense will be who is going to replace running back DeMarco Murray. Fortunately for Stoops, he has two senior backs waiting to step in and share the load, along with newcomer Brandon Williams. Behind four returning offensive lineman and playing alongside one of the best passing attacks in the nation, whoever is carrying the ball should find plenty of room to operate. The ground game won’t be dominant, but it will be more than enough to keep opponents honest.

Defensively, the Sooners probably underperformed in 2010-11, giving up almost 22 points per game. That being said, this unit is filled with talented players, including nine returning starters. In addition, the defensive line gets a boost from two highly-rated freshmen tackles. Oklahoma’s defense needs to be a little more consistent this season, but the unit won’t have to carry the load thanks to the high-powered offense.

Looking at the schedule, the Sooners should be able to sleepwalk to eight wins. Four games could potentially pose problems for Stoops’ team, starting with an early season out-of-conference matchup against Florida State. Once Big 12 play begins, a home game against a loaded Texas A&M team, a road game against Oklahoma State, and the Red River Shootout against Texas are the three games that could decide the season for the Sooners. The contest against Oklahoma State on the road at the end of the year could be especially tough if the Sooners enter the game undefeated with a shot at the title trip on the line.

In the end, the Sooners’ offense should get them by Florida State, Texas and Texas A&M. The Seminoles are breaking in a new starter at QB, the Longhorns struggled last year, and Oklahoma is going to be out for revenge against the Aggies. The season will likely come down to the finale against the Cowboys, who the Sooners defeated 47-41 last year thanks to a record-setting performance from Jones. Oklahoma State returns a ton of weapons on offense, but the Sooners return just as many. In the end, Oklahoma has the talent and the leaders to reach its fifth BCS Championship since 2000.
