For the most part, the player under center is considered the leader of the offense. QBs take the blame for losses and get the credit for wins. QBs win the Heisman Trophy on a regular basis, and they are given huge contracts by NFL teams in the hopes that they can turn around franchises. As Al Pacino said in Any Given Sunday, “It’s the top spot, kid.” The current quarterback class in the college game is as good as it has been in several years, and with the influx of spread offenses, the numbers being put up are just ridiculous. Not to mention the fact that the national title hopes of several teams hinge on the arms of their starting QBs.

1. Andrew Luck, Stanford Cardinal

There is a reason that Luck entered the 2011-12 season as one of the frontrunners for the Heisman and the consensus top quarterback prospect as far as NFL scouts are concerned. He has arm strength to spare, and he is one of the most accurate QBs in the nation. Luck threw 32 touchdowns compared to just eight interceptions last year, while connecting on 71 percent of his throws. He is also plenty athletic and tough, adding nearly 500 yards on the ground. More importantly, Luck has managed to transform Stanford into a program that could contend for the PAC-12 and national title.

2. Landry Jones, Oklahoma Sooners

Playing in Oklahoma’s spread offense, Landry Jones put up incredible numbers a year ago. He threw for more than 4,700 yards – the second-highest total in the nation. He also added 38 touchdowns. Jones is a true pocket passer, and with the weapons surrounding him, a 40-plus touchdown season is within reach this season. The Sooners are among the favorites to win the national title this season, and if they secure a spot in the BCS Championship, Jones could find himself walking away with the Heisman Trophy.

3. Kellen Moore, Boise State Broncos

No matter what the criteria used to judge a successful quarterback, Keller Moore passes the test. He is accurate, efficient and a proven winner. He ranked sixth in passing yards a year ago, completing 71.3 percent of his passes and throwing just six interceptions compared to 35 touchdowns. Moore is on pace to become the all-time winningest QB in college football history this season, and he could easily lead Boise State to an undefeated season and possible national title appearance. Virginia Tech, Oregon and Georgia are among the powerhouses Moore has helped the Broncos topple while under center, and he is a legit Heisman candidate.

4. Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma State Cowboys

Weeden erupted last season, throwing for more than 4,200 yards. His total ranked third in the country, and he also connected on 34 touchdowns. He is picking up where he left off, and he currently sits second in passing yards in 2011-12, completing almost 72 percent of his throws. It definitely helps to have defending Biletnikoff recipient Justin Blackmon to throw to, but Weeden’s sudden emergence has given Oklahoma State one of the most powerful passing attacks in the nation. The Cowboys had their first-ever 11-win season with Weeden under center last season, and they are looking for even more this year.

5. Denard Robinson, Michigan Wolverines

He isn’t the type of quarterback that is going to garner a lot of attention from NFL scouts but Denard Robinson’s playmaking ability is second to none at the quarterback position. After all, Robinson finished fourth in the nation in rushing yards one year ago. His rushing stats will be toned down in the new offensive system installed by Brady Hoke, but based on his performance in a thrilling come from behind win against Notre Dame, he will have no problem putting up impressive numbers. Robinson topped 300 yards through the air and accounted for all five of the Wolverines scores. He also tossed four passing touchdowns, including the game winner with two seconds remaining. He may be built for the college game, but Robinson is a true leader and a clutch QB.
