2011 Navy Football Predictions, Odds, Picks and Schedule – 2011 Navy Midshipmen Football Preview

2011 Navy Midshipmen College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Navy NCAA Football Preview: In an era of college football when more and more teams are converting to some type of spread attack, Navy has remained a program dedicated to the days of the triple option. Runs, runs and more runs have been the Midshipmen’s calling card, and they have parlayed the philosophy into consistent winning records and bowl appearances. Coming off a 9-4 season with plenty of offensive starters returning, more of the same is expected in 2010-11.

There are teams that look on paper when it comes to running the football, and then there is Navy – one team that can be penciled in as a top-10 rushing team nationally. In fact, the Midshipmen led the nation is rushing yards in four straight seasons from 2005 to 2008. They have ranked fourth and sixth, respectively, the last two years as well. With the triple option system that head coach Ken Niumatalolo has installed, Navy is able to run the ball on its opponents, even though they know it’s coming.

At the center of the attack will be quarterback Kriss Proctor. Although Proctor has started just one game in his collegiate career, he is a senior and has spent plenty of time around the program learning the triple option system. Proctor will be replacing Ricky Dobbs as starter. Dobbs was more of a power rusher with a legitimate arm, but Proctor has been tabbed as a home run hitter with average throwing ability. While his explosiveness will certainly benefit the Navy offense, Proctor’s durability will be put to the test as he takes over full-time duties for the first time in his career. If he gets hurt or even wears down, the Midshipmen offense will suffer.

Joining Proctor in the backfield will be running back Alex Teich. Injuries forced Teich into the starting lineup six games into the season, and he finished with nearly 900 yards on the ground. Stepping into the full-time role this year, Teich should easily top 1,000 yards. Do-it-all back Gee Gee Greene will see his share of carries as well. Greene rushed for more than 500 yards last season and was the team’s second-leading receiver. Plenty of other backs will see carries in this run-heavy offense, but Teich and Greene will be the main cogs. Whoever is carrying the ball will have the luxury of doing so behind four returning starters at offensive line.

The defensive side of things is going to be somewhat of an unknown for Navy this season. In terms of talent, experts actually have the current group of players ranked as one of the better units for the Midshipmen. However, the same unit has very little in-game experience, especially in the secondary and on the defensive line. The unquestioned leader of this year’s defense will be tackle Jabari Tuani. He is the only returning starter on the line, but he is coming off a 72-tackle season, including 16 tackles for loss. If Tuani can play up to that level once again, he may just take enough pressure off this young defense for the unit to do some damage.

As an independent school, Navy has some flexibility as far as scheduling goes. However, the Midshipmen definitely have some legitimate competition awaiting them. They go on the road to face defending SEC East champion South Carolina, Notre Dame and Rutgers. They also have home games against Southern Miss, Air Force and Troy. With that schedule alone, it is going to be tough for Navy to match last year’s success in terms of overall record.

With Proctor’s added element of speed at the QB position, this year’s Navy team could easily lead the nation in rushing. However, losing the ability to surprise opponents with the deep ball is going to take its toll. Throw in a suspect defense and a tougher schedule, and this year’s Midshipmen probably aren’t going to sniff double-digit wins. That being said, Navy should make a bowl game and even have a shot at hoisting the Commander-in-Chief Trophy.
