2011 Missouri Tigers College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Missouri Tigers NCAA Football Preview: Coming off a year that saw the Missouri win 10 games and knock of No. 1 Oklahoma, the Tigers program is on the verge of becoming one of the elite in the Big 12. However, one bad season can quickly erase the momentum that the Tigers have been building in recent years. With questions surrounding the quarterback spot on a team that returns a lot of talent, the 2011-12 season could be boom or bust for Missouri.
Replacing a quarterback is never a fun process, but when that quarterback is a first round pick in the NFL draft like Blaine Gabbert, finding a replacement seems like a much more daunting task. Gabbert was a master of Missouri’s spread attack, and he was mobile enough to burn defense with his legs. James Franklin is the frontrunner to replace Gabbert because of his mobility, but the final decision may not be made until a few weeks before the season. Blaine’s younger brother Tyler Gabbert is in the mix as well, along with a freshman recruit.
Whoever ultimately wins the job will be surrounded by 10 returning starts, including four senior offensive linemen. A new QB couldn’t ask for a more comfortable feeling stepping under center as a starter for the first time. Not to mention the fact that Misssouri’s spread offense is famous for creating very makeable throws as well as being a nightmare to defend. Tight end Michael Egnew is an excellent safety valve as well when opposing pass rusher start to pressure the pocket.
The Tigers also lose their best player on defense in defensive end Aldon Smith, and again, he was a first round pick in the NFL draft. However, six other starters return to the front seven, and pressuring opposing QBs and shutting down rushers shouldn’t be a concern. The same cannot be said for the secondary, which lost three starters from last year’s team. In the pass-happy Big 12, a suspect secondary is a major issue. It is doubtful that the inexperienced corners can contain the spread attacks Missouri will face on a weekly basis, but they have to at least limit the big plays if the Tigers are going to make a run at the conference crown.
The schedule for Missouri isn’t exactly a walk in the park either. A tough out-of-conference game at Arizona State early in the year will test the Tigers, but they should come away with the win. The same cannot be said for a road game against Oklahoma. The Sooners will be out for revenge after last year’s upset, and Landry Jones will be eager to pick apart Missouri’s young secondary. The equally potent passing offense of Oklahoma State could also prove too much for the Tigers. A road game against a loaded and underrated Texas A&M team looks like another potential stumbling block.
If the Missouri’s new QB catches on to the system quickly, the Tigers offense could pile up enough points to defeat the Big 12 frontrunners in shootout fashion. However, the play of the young secondary is probably going to be the deciding factor in every big game the Tigers play this season. In a different conference, Missouri might be able to survive, but the passing attacks seen in the Big 12 are as good as any in the country.
