2011 Miami Hurricanes Football Predictions, Odds, Picks and Schedule – 2011 Miami-Fl NCAA Football Preview

2011 Miami Hurricanes College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Miami-Fl NCAA Football Preview: After high hopes in 2010-11 only to finish a disappointing 7-6, the once proud Miami football program brought an end to the Randy Shannon era. In steps first-year coach Al Golden, who somehow managed to turn the Temple Owls into a team that could win some football games. On paper, it would make sense that he could certainly do the same for a school like Miami that has no problem attracting top prospects and incredible athletes. Unfortunately, Golden has walked into an absolute disaster off the field as allegations regarding improper benefits swirl around the program. The ultimate outcome of the scandal is unknown , but even in the short term, Golden could be without several big names in 2011-12.

Whether or not starting quarterback Jacory Harris is eligible to play this season is going to have a huge impact on Miami’s success this season. While he has underperformed to a degree, Harris is still a versatile weapon on offense and an experienced leader. Stephen Morris got some playing time last year and is waiting in the wings, but just because the backup has experience doesn’t mean it is an ideal situation to have him thrust into the starter’s role. Whoever ends up under center is going to miss big play receiver Leonard Hankerson, and the Hurricanes are going to struggle to match their passing stats from a year ago.

The good news is that the ground game should be even better this season, and after averaging more than 180 yards a game last year, Miami fans should be smiling. Sophomore Lamar Miller seems primed for a breakout season behind three experienced offensive linemen. If the Hurricanes can dominate their opponents on the ground, it will go a long way to masking the possible QB issues as well to solving the red zone inefficiencies from a year ago. Despite piling up the second most yards in the ACC last year, Miami averaged just 26.3 points per game.

At least the Hurricanes will have a strong defense to fall back on. Despite giving up a lot of rushing yards to opponents, the Hurricanes were tough when it mattered, giving up just over 20 points per game. They should improve in both areas this season as five members of the front seven return, including stud linebacker Sean Spence. Miami will be breaking in two new cornerbacks, but both starting safeties return. Not to mention the fact that Miami always seems to be sending corners to the NFL. In the end, this year’s group should rank among the best in the ACC.

The schedule doesn’t exactly do the Hurricanes any favors either. While the ACC as a whole is definitely lacking compared to some other conferences, Miami does draw tops dogs Virginia Tech and Florida State on the road. They also have out-of-conference games against Ohio State, Kansas State and an underrated South Florida team that beat Miami last year. While the rest of the schedule isn’t exactly intimidating, all the problems that come with breaking in a new QB as well as other starters are going to show up in these games against tougher opponents.

Assuming the rumors are true and Harris ends up missing some or most of the season, the Hurricanes could derail this season. The defense is always going to be stout given all the speed and talent on the field, but for an offense that already struggled finishing off drivers, the loss of their experienced signal caller is going to hurt. Throw in a schedule that includes tough games both in and out of the conference, it is hard to imagine this year approaching anything special. The Hurricanes will find a way to make a bowl game, but an ACC title isn’t going to happen with all the uncertainty going on off the field.
