2011 Florida Gators College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Florida NCAA Football Preview: Youth and a new philosophy are what define the 2011 Florida Gators. Coming off a disappointing 8-5 2010 campaign the Gators are looking to rebound and hit the stride that made them so successful during the Tebow era. New philosophies will come from the revamped coaching staff which includes a new head coach and offensive coordinator. Will Muschamp has taken over as the head coach and will have the duty of leading this team back to SEC championships and BCS bowls. Muschamp spent three seasons as the defensive coordinator for Texas University and will look to bring that hardnosed mentality to The Swamp.
Fixing the offensive woes of the 2010 season will fall upon the Gators new offensive coordinator Charlie Weis. Weis will be introducing a pro style offense which will differ from the spread that the Gators are accustomed to. No matter how good of an offensive philosophy Weis introduces it still boils down to execution and the man in charge of that will be John Brantley. Brantley is coming off an awful season that saw him throw for 2,061 yards with nine touchdowns and ten interceptions. Even in a bowl victory Brantley was only able to account for 41 passing yards and an interception against Penn State. If the Gators want to find any offensive rhythm they will need much better play out of their quarterback.
One key addition to the offense that will fit into the pro style offense very well is tight end A.C. Leonard. Leonard is primarily going to be effective in the passing game and a tight end that has good hands and runs crisp routes is a quarterback’s best friend. His presence in the air attack will open up opportunities on the edges for the wide receivers and assist in the running game. There was little to get excited about in the Gators spring game but running back Chris Rainey did look good. In 2010 Rainey had 51 rushing attempts accumulating 366 yards with 7.2 yards per carry and scored twice. Rainey is going to be a much bigger part of the rushing game this year.
The Gators had a few key departures on the defensive side of the ball. Ahmad Black who led the defense in tackles with 108 in 2010 and finished second in 2009 with seventy entered the draft. Corner Janoris Jenkins who was expected to return to the team for his senior season was arrested in April for marijuana possession. This resulted in his dismissal from the team and leaves a hole in the secondary.
The strength of the Gators defense lies in the defensive line. The anchor to the line is the two tackles Dominique Easley and Shariff Floyd. After a disappointing freshman campaign these interior lineman are going to be key to shutting down the rushing game. The Gators gave up far to many rushing yards last year and it’s an area they will need to tighten up to compete in the always tough SEC. Senior defensive end William Green is going to have to be a leader and add experience to this young front three. When running a 3-4 defense the hybrid linebacker/lineman is just as important as the front three. Filling this role will be five-star defensive end Ronald Powell. The void left by Black in the secondary will now be filled by Matt Elam. Elam will have an advantage going into this season because he saw significant time as a third corner in 2010. The linebacker core will be led by sophomore Jelani Jenkins and with a full season of experience under his belt will be a key player in the front seven. In 2010 he ranked first among SEC freshman and second on the Gators squad with 76 tackles.
Any season played within the SEC will be a tough schedule. The first of October the Gators will welcome Alabama to The Swamp. This is the start of a string of six games within the SEC. They will take to the road to play both LSU andSouth Carolinain two games that could decide the fate of their BCS lives. Rounding out there schedule is a Florida State team that pounded them in Tallahassee last season.
The Gators have reason to be optimistic this season. They were young last year and a season of experience will greatly help this still young team. But with a new head coach and a brand new offensive system it may take a few weeks for them to really find their identity and the SEC isn’t a forgiving conference. With all these changes in place expect a nine win season to go down as a major accomplishment.
