2011 Arkansas Razorbacks College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Arkansas Razorbacks NCAA Football Preview: With a high-powered offense installed by head coach Bobby Petrino, the Arkansas Razorbacks made some noise last season, posting a 10-3 record and making a BCS bowl. Not to mention the fact that the three losses were to Alabama, Ohio State and eventual national champion Auburn, and two of the losses were by five points or less. After being on the verge of claiming the top spot in the toughest conference in the nation, expectations are high for the Razorbacks in 2011-12.
If those expectations are going to be met, it will be without Ryan Mallet under center. The rifle-armed signal caller is now a New England Patriot, leaving quarterback Tyler Wilson to fill the void. While Wilson doesn’t have a lot of experience, he did look more than capable of leading the Razorbacks when he was forced to replace an injured Mallet during last year’s game against Auburn. Arkansas came out on the losing end, but Wilson topped 300 yards and threw for three touchdowns. He will also benefit from the pass-happy Bobby Petrino contrived offense that can make just about any QB successful.
The best player on this year’s team is probably running back Kniles Davis, who emerged as a true go-to back in the second half of last year. Not only will he be a force to be reckoned with, but Davis should take pressure of Wilson as well. The offensive line struggled at times last season, but another year of experience should with Petrino’s system should help the big boys up front both running the ball and in pass protection. Davis could end up being the most productive back in the SEC West.
The Hogs boast a much-improved defense as well, especially against the pass. Last season, Arkansas connected on 36 touchdowns through the air, while allowing only 13. That being said, the play of the front seven will have a major impact on the Razorbacks do this year. The top teams in the SEC, especially the SEC West, love to pound the ball. Case in point, the Razorbacks gave up more than 200 rushing yards four times last year, including in the three games they last. If Arkansas gets gashed by the run again this season, any hopes of a conference title are going to quickly disappear.
While the Razorbacks certainly have the talent to win the SEC and even compete for a national title, the brutal schedule of the SEC West is likely going to takes its toll. Road games at Alabama and LSU seem next to impossible to win, and even a home contest against SEC East favorite South Carolina is going to be rough. An out-of-conference matchup with Texas A&M in October could be the turning point of the season. If the Razorbacks lose to the Aggies, the Razorbacks could come unhinged. If they emerge victorious, Arkansas could be on its way to a special year. However, the Aggies are better than a lot of people think.
