2011 Boston College Eagles College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – BC Eagles NCAA Football Preview: The transition from Tom O’Brien to Jeff Jagodzinski hasn’t exactly been a smooth one for the Boston College football program. Declining win totals have been a theme as the offense has struggled to score points. The good news is that the defense has remained stout, and the Eagles have made the postseason every year since 1998. After playing a ton of young players last season and still managing a 7-6 record, the 2011-12 season could be Jagodzinski’s chance to prove his worth as coach of the Eagles.
Success for Boston College starts and ends with the defense. The Eagles ranked inside the top 20 in terms of points allowed last season, giving up less than 20 points per game. This year’s group features some newcomers on the defensive line, but the linebackers are stacked. Superstar Luke Kuechly is coming off a ridiculous 183 tackle campaign, and he will be joined by Kevin Pierre-Louis. As a freshman last season, Pierre-Louis added 93 tackles of his own. The Eagles starting cornerbacks are both multi-year starters as well, and last season, they combined for nine interceptions. In short, Boston College should field one of the best defenses in both the ACC and the nation.
Offense will likely be a different story. Last season, the Eagles were 109th in points scored and ranked 90th or worse in both passing and rushing yards. Boston College scored less than 21 points eight times and was dead last in the conference in scoring. Quarterback Chase Rettig was a big part of the problem, throwing just six touchdowns compared to nine interceptions. The sophomore will have another year of experience under his belt this time around, which can only help his numbers.
The one bright spot for the offense has been and will likely continue to be running back Montel Harris. The senior topped 1,200 yards last season despite having no help from the passing game. The offensive line loses some key pieces, but improvements in the passing game should offset the losses. At any rate, Harris should have another successful season as the centerpiece of the Eagles offense.
Looking at the schedule, the Eagles have a chance to come out of the gates on a high note. Games against Northwestern and Central Florida won’t be freebies, but overall, Boston College could be 6-0 heading into a bye week. Reality could set in after the break, starting with a trip to Blacksburg to play Virginia Tech. The Eagles stay on the road to play Maryland before returning home to play Florida State and N.C. State. The season comes to a close with trips to Notre Dame and Miami. Needless to say, it could be a tale of two seasons for Boston College.
Armed with one of the stingiest defenses in the country, the Eagles should be able improve on last year’s record. The offense is still a work in progress, but another year of experience should have the scoring output heading in the right direction. At the very least, Boston College should be able run the ball and play defense, which is always a winning formula. An ACC title is still out of reach, but another bowl game should certainly be in the works. A brutal schedule will mask the strides this team makes in 2011-12.
