2011 Boise State College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Boise St Broncos NCAA Football Preview: From 2000-2009, no college football program won more games than Boise State. The Broncos compiled a 112-17 record during the stretch, and they picked up where they left off last season, going 12-1. Despite the disappointing late season loss to Nevada that cost the Broncos a trip to a BCS bowl, the future remains bright for the program after Chris Petersen decided to remain as head coach, rather than bolting to a bigger school. Plenty of key starters are back as well as the Broncos try for their third straight 12-plus win season in 2011-12.

Leading the way for the Broncos offensively will be senior quarterback Kellen Moore. His status as a pro prospect can be questioned, but there is no doubt that Moore is one of the best college quarterbacks in recent memory. He is 38-2 as a starter and completes more than 70 percent of his passes on a regular basis. Moore is coming off a year when he finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy race, and he needs just eight wins to become the all-time collegiate leader in wins as a starting QB. Plain and simple, Moore wins games when he is under center, and that isn’t going to change this year.

The bad news for Moore is that his top two receivers from last year are gone. Titus Young and Austin Pettis are now catching passes in the NFL, leaving Chris Potter, Tyler Shoemaker and Geraldo Boldewijn to fill the void. Shoemaker figures to be Moore’s top option after seeing plenty of playing time last season, but Boldewijn has been tabbed as the deep threat for the offense. Despite the turnover at the receiving position, Moore’s accuracy makes catching the ball in the Broncos’ offense easy. The transition shouldn’t be too bad.

Moore will also benefit from an underrated running game led by one of the best and most experienced offensive lines. Running back Doug Martin finished last season with more than 1,200 yards, and he crossed the goal line 12 times. With Moore, Martin and a dominant line, the Boise State offense should once again be one of the most efficient and most prolific in the nation.

The Broncos should be tough on defense as well where Boise State has NFL prospects at multiple positions. Defensive tackle Billy Winn, safety George Iloka, defensive end Shea McLellin and linebacker Byron Hout could all be playing on Sundays one day. With the offense likely putting up plenty of points, an already stout defense should be to blitz and gamble for turnovers on a regular basis. The unit will likely be overshadowed by the offense, but the Broncos’ defense will make plenty of big plays as well.

Looking at the schedule, two game stand out as potential problems for the Broncos. The season opener against Georgia won’t be easy, and late season showdown at home versus TCU will pit the two best non-BCS conference programs against each other. The outcome of these two games will likely determine whether or not Petersen’s group plays in a BCS bowl. The pesky Wolf Pack that knocked off the Broncos last season will have to come to Boise this season, which should translate into a comfortable win for the home team.

In the end, the Broncos are a complete football team on both sides of the ball with plenty of leadership at important positions. Thanks to their experience, Moore and company should be ready to play at a high level as soon as the season begins. Boise State knocked off Oregon to start the 2009 season and Virginia Tech last season. Georgia will likely become the next victim this year. The matchup against TCU could be a different story. The Horned Frogs have an elite defense that helped them win the Rose Bowl, and no team was better in terms of point differential last year. However, the Broncos haven’t lost at home since 2001, and TCU will have a new quarerback in 2011-12. It all sets up for a special season for the Broncos, who should be able to run the table. With a perfect record, Boise State should be in the mix for an at-large BCS bid, but a national title opportunity will still require some help from the other top teams in the country.
