Among the major conferences in college football, the ACC has been among the most disappointing on the national level in recent years. In fact, the conference has just a single BCS win in the last seven years. The last time an ACC won the national title was way back in 1999 when Florida State defeated Virginia Tech.
The conference appears to lack depth once again in 2011-12, but there are a few teams at the top of the conference that could make a little noise in the national championship chase. Several new quarterbacks will be taking the command of their respective teams, and it is safe to say that the ACC is still in rebuilding mode as a whole. That being said, not every ACC school is going to be a pushover this year.
The Favorites – 2011 ACC Football Odds, Predictions and Preview
In his first year as head coach at Florida State, Jimbo Fisher guided the Seminoles to a 10-win season. With 18 starters returning from last year’s team, the glory days of FSU football could be on the way back. The big piece missing from the puzzle is quarterback Christian Ponder, but heir apparent E.J. Manuel has in-game experience and plenty of talent surrounding him on the offensive line and at the skill positions. On defense, Brandon Jenkins leads a unit that led the nation in sacks one year ago, and the Seminoles figure to be one of the stoutest groups in 2011-12. Florida State is the class of the Atlantic Division, and the Seminoles should cruise to an ACC title. If they can somehow manage to get by Oklahoma in September, they could have a shot at winning it all.
Defending conference champion Virginia Tech always seems to find a way to hang near the top of the ACC standings. Winners of three of the last four conference titles, the Hokies will look to earn another BCS bid in 2011-12. Dual-threat QB Tyrod Taylor will be replaced by Logano Thomas, and a young defense will have to get learn on the job so to speak. That being said, Frank Beamer’s club is coming off a season when it led the nation in turnover differential, and cornerback Jayron Hosley is back after leading the nation with nine interceptions. This isn’t the most talented Hokie team in recent memory, but they could still win the Coastal Division.
Potential Sleepers – 2011 ACC Football Odds, Predictions and Preview
The Miami Hurricanes are a far cry from the dominant program that dominated the college football world 10 years ago. That being said, seven starters return this season for a defense that is always among the most athletic in the nation. The quarterback position is still a question mark after Jacory Harris failed to live up to expectations last year, but the Hurricanes have plenty of speed and depth at the running back and receiver positions. The same cannot be said for the defense. Although very talented, the unit does not have the depth to handle any injuries. With a road schedule that includes trips to Florida State, Virginia Tech and North Carolina, health is probably going to determine whether or not Miami has a chance to win the Coastal Division.
Not since the days of Phillip Rivers has a North Carolina State quarterback been talked about as much as starter Mike Glennon. The receiving core is inexperienced, but Glennon has a go-to target in tight end George Bryan. The Wolfpack shouldn’t need Glennon to be superman anyway with an excellent defense returning. The front seven held opponents to just over 100 yards per game on the ground, and three starters are back in the secondary. If Florida State slips up, N.C. State could steal the Atlantic Division.
Team to Avoid – 2011 ACC Football Odds, Predictions and Preview
Head coach Butch Davis has brought plenty of talent to North Carolina since taking the reins, but a lot of that talent went to the NFL in April’s draft. Aside from a solid offensive line, the Tarheels will be breaking in new players across the board on the offensive side of the ball. The defensive front seven does return a few starters, but the secondary is as raw as they come. This looks like a rebuilding year for North Carolina.
