Villanova Wildcats(28-3 overall, 15-3 in Big East) – Head coach Jay Wright led his Villanova Wildcats to another Big East regular season Championship this year and has the Wildcats looking strong to win the Big East Tournament and wind up with a #1 seed in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. Villanova is currently the #1 team in the latest RPI Ratings Index and is an impressive 10-2 overall against RPI Top 50 teams. Villanova has a well balanced team that has four players averaging double figures points per game led by senior Josh Hart who pumps in 18.7 points per game to go with 6.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists. Villanova appears to have all the ingredients necessary to make another run at the National Championship and anything less than a Final Four appearance should be considered a disappointment for how good this Villanova squad is this year.
Butler Bulldogs(23-7 overall, 12-6 in Big East) – The Butler Bulldogs have their best team since former head coach Brad Stevens left for the Boston Celtics and have a real shot at winning the Big East Tournament and making some big time noise in the NCAA Tournament for head coach Chris Holtmann. Butler showed it can play with anyone in the nation by going 2-0 against Villanova this season and they are 4-0 against RPI Top 25 teams with wins against Arizona(RPI 9) and Cincinnati (RPI 14). Butler has a RPI of 11 as they head to Madison Square Garden this week and they can easily play themselves into a 2 seed if they can win the Big East Tournament and end up going 3-0 against Villanova. That is a tall order but Butler seems to have their number and we like Butler’s chances at getting to the Big East Tournament Championship as their bracket shapes up nicely for them with likely games against a struggling Xavier team a Providence team that has overachieved greatly but isn’t as talented as one would expect from a 3 seed in the Big East Tournament.
2017 Big East Tournament Prediction: Villanova to win The 2017 Big East Tournament Championship Game should come down to a Villanova versus Butler matchup in our opinion and we have to give the edge to a Villanova team that will be looking to avoid an embarrassing 0-3 record against Butler this season. Villanova came up short by losing to Seton Hall in last year’s Big East Tournament Title Game after winning the Big East Tournament in 2015 for the school’s second Big East Tournament Title of all-time. Villanova is a more talented team than Butler and Jay Wright is far too great of a coach to see him lose a 3rd time to a team that he should beat. Our money will be going down on Villanova to cut down the nets in the garden on Saturday, March 11th.
