2016 March Madness Predictions – Top National Title Sleeper Bets: Upsets are all the rage during March Madness, but while double-digit seeds can play the role of Cinderella in opening rounds or even reach the Final Four, winning the national title is another animal all together. History shows that the last time standing is usually from a power conference, and more often than not, it is a traditional basketball power. With that in mind, the underdogs that you bet on to win the NCAA Tournament need to meet stricter criteria than those you bet on to win their region. Major conference teams, particularly those seeded fourth or better, have historically had the advantage when it comes to winning it all. Here is a closer look at some of the best values bets when trying to pick the eventual national champion.
2016 March Madness Predictions: Top National Title Sleeper Bets
Oregon Ducks (+1400): Yes, it was a bit of a surprise to see the Oregon Ducks land one of the four No. 1 seeds, but they could still be a bit underrated at their current odds. In fact, the Ducks are getting longer odds than all the other top seeds, and they are even behind second-seeded Michigan State and fourth-seeded Kentucky. In addition to have one of the better draws among the top seeds, Oregon is a balanced, deep team that has won eight games in a row entering the NCAA Tournament. They also won arguably the toughest conference in the country, and they own a regular season win over potential Sweet 16 opponent Baylor. Don’t write off the Ducks just because they aren’t a traditional power.
Duke Blue Devils (+2500): The defending national champs have endured an up-and-down season, but they have some big wins over tough opponents, and have enough firepower on offense to make a run if they get hot. Grayson Allen is a fearless scorer, and he is one of four players that have drained at least 50 3-pointers for the Blue Devils. Duke also has one of the biggest X-factors in the entire field in Brandon Ingram. The lanky wing is a serious candidate to be the top pick in the NBA draft, and when he gets hot from the perimeter, he is next to unstoppable. It will only take a few big games from Ingram to push the Blue Devils into the title picture, and since the West Region is probably the most wide-open of the four, it is a great region to target if you are looking for dark horse championship candidate.
Maryland Terrapins (+3300): A shaky finish to the year dropped Maryland to a No. 5 seed, but the Terrapins are still the same talent-laden team that was ranked in the top five in the country earlier this year. They have an NBA lottery pick in the frontcourt in Diamond Stone, and they have capable scorers Robert Carter, Jake Layman and Rasheed Sulaimon surrounding dynamic point guard Melo Trimble. All five players average more than 11.0 points per game, and if Trimble is on top of his game, the Terrapins are an elite team. Given their odds, the Terps could be worth a flier in case they can out it all together at the right time.
Texas A&M Aggies (+3300): While the Aggies aren’t a dominant offensive team, there are plenty of other things to love about No. 3 seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament. They have plenty of physical, athletic players, which is one of the main reasons the Aggies are rock solid on the boards and on the defensive end. They are also a surprisingly good passing team, ranking 11th in the country in assists. Texas A&M has won eight of its last nine games, with the lone loss coming to Kentucky in the SEC tournament finale. The Aggies could be peaking at the perfect time.
