For starters, many of the teams have been up and down throughout the year, looking drastically different from a game-to-game basis. The region also has teams that employ very different styles with several defensive-minded teams at the top and high-scoring teams waiting to pull the upsets. Depending on which teams control the tempo, just about any team could beat any other. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at the South Region.

NCAA South Bracket Favorites to Make the Final Four

Georgetown: The Hoyas have been the victim of NCAA Tournament upsets in recent years, and one of the reasons is their defensive-minded mentality that often keeps scores low and games close. However, there is a reason that this year’s team was able to win the Big East regular season crown and make the jump from a good team to a great one, and his name is Otto Porter Jr. He gives Georgetown a go-to scorer that is a matchup nightmare thanks to his size and range. Porter’s all-around skill set and impact on the defensive end are nearly a mirror image of what former Hoya Jeff Green brought to the table. For the record, Green took Georgetown to the Final Four in his final year with the team.

Florida: While they weren’t playing their best down the stretch, Billy Donovan is one of the best coaches in the country when it comes to getting his teams ready for March Madness. More importantly, the Gators have a stifling defense and a guard-heavy roster that limits turnovers and creates open looks. Injuries have made Florida’s lack of depth a problem in recent weeks, but the added television timeouts and spread out format of the NCAA Tournament will help hide that issue and allow the Gators to get back to playing like the team that looked like one of the best in the country for most of the season.

VCU: They were the darlings of the Big Dance in 2011, and the Rams could be back at it this year. In an era of college hoops when a lot of teams struggle to score points, the Rams rank 11th in the country in points per game. VCU has three players that can light it up from beyond the arc, including Troy Daniels, who has nailed 117 3-pointers already. Throw in an aggressive defense that creates a ton of turnovers, and the Rams can run just about any team right out of the gym.

NCAA South Bracket Upset Specials

South Dakota State over Michigan: After a scorching start, the Wolverines’ youth is showing itself at the wrong time. Michigan went just 5-5 in its final 10 games, and even the stellar play of point guard Trey Burke hasn’t made up for an overall young roster and a shaky defense. Now, the Wolverines will have to try to contend with a San Dakota State team that has an explosive scorer in Nate Wolters and four players that have hit at least 48 3-pointers. The Jackrabbits have the perimeter firepower to make Michigan’s defense pay, and they look an awful lot like the guard-heavy Ohio Bobcats’ team that ousted the Wolverines in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

Minnesota over UCLA: The Golden Gophers have had a nasty habit of only playing well against bad teams, but with wins over Indiana and Michigan State, there is no denying this team’s talent. Specifically, Minnesota has a strong, athletic frontcourt in Trevor Mbakwe and Rodney Williams Jr. that can punish opponents inside. Meanwhile, the Bruins are more of a finesse-style, offensive-minded team that has been struggles controlling the boards. The Golden Gophers’ physicality will help them overpower a UCLA team missing a key contributor in Jordan Adams.

NCAA South Bracket High Seeds on Alert

Kansas: The Jayhawks are the No. 1 seed in the South Region, and while they have had plenty of wins over top competition this year, they have also have some bad losses, including a loss to an 11-21 TCU team. Kansas can have serious issues scoring points at times, and if the Jayhawks have one of their poor offensive showings in the first couple of round of the NCAA Tournament, it could mean an early exit. After all, Kansas second game is going to be against either a high-scoring North Carolina team or a Villanova team that has beaten Louisville, Marquette, Georgetown and Syracuse this year. After that, the high-scoring offenses of Michigan or VCU could be waiting. Kansas landed in a region that could expose its biggest weakness sooner rather than later.
