2012 Southern Conference Tournament Odds and Predictions to Win 2012 SoCon Tournament – 2012 SoCon Tournament Favorites, Sleepers, Schedule and TV Listings plus Expert Picks: The Southern Conference is divided into two divisions, but to say that the divisions are a bit uneven would be a major understatement. Not a single team in the North Division finished above .500 for the year, while four teams in the South Division accomplished the feat. In addition, UNC Greensboro won the North Division with a 10-8 record, while Charleston finished fourth in the South Division with an identical record. Unfortunately for the teams in the South Division, the Southern Conference seeds team based on their finish in their division. As a result, UNC Greensboro is a No. 1 seed, even with its sub .500 record. Needless to say, there could be plenty of upsets during the conference tournament.
The Favorite – 2012 Southern Conference Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
With a 16-2 record in league play, the Davidson Wildcats (22-7) were the best team in either division of the Southern Conference by a wide margin. Not to mention the fact that they went on the road out of conference and upset Big 12 champion Kansas. Davidson ranks in the top 20 nationally in both points per game and rebounds per game and is by far the top scoring team in the Southern Conference at 77.9 points per game. The Wildcats have five players averaging in double figures and five players that have connected on at least 25 3-pointers. Davidson takes care of business on the offensive end of the court and has more than enough firepower to back up its regular season crown in the conference tournament.
The Dark Horses – 2012 Southern Conference Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
Although they aren’t the most explosive team in the Southern Conference, the Wofford Terriers (19-12) have a style of play that was good enough to help them finish with the second-best record in either division. The Terriers have the stingiest defense in the conference, allowing less than 63 points per game, and they have a pair of seniors in their backcourt. Starting guards Kevin Giltner and Brad Loesing combine for nearly 30 points per game, and both have hit 50 or more 3-pointers this season. If Wofford controls the tempo of games throughout the conference tournament, the team’s experienced guards could make the difference in tight games in the closing minutes.
There is no doubt that the Charleston Cougars (19-11) struggled against the upper-echelon teams in the Southern Conference this season. That being said, the Cougars did score victories against major conference foes Clemson and Tennessee, and they bring a little momentum into the conference tournament. Charleston won six of its final seven regular season games, and forward Antwaine Wiggins leads a deep team that improved on the offensive end and defensive end late in the year. Charleston should get another crack at the likes of Wofford and Davidson in the tournament, and there is always a chance that the Cougars have improved enough in the final month of the year to turn the tables.
Sleeper Special – 2012 Southern Conference Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
It is amazing that the UNC Greensboro Spartans (12-18) managed to win the conference’s North Division. The Spartans are shooting just 40.2 percent as a team, while allowing opponents to score almost 78 points a game. In fact, UNC Greensboro had the worst defense in the Southern Conference in terms of points per game. Sophomore swingman Trevis Simpson is scoring more than 18 points per game, but with his 38.1 percent shooting, he is anything but an efficient scorer. Despite all the issues, the Spartans can’t be ruled out because winning their division earned them a top seed in the conference tournament. UNC Greensboro gets a bye in the first round and then has a very winnable game before facing any of the conference’s top teams. The Spartans basically get a free pass into the semifinals, meaning they only have to play two really good games to become tournament champs.
