2012 MEAC Tournament Odds and Predictions to Win 2012 MEAC Tournament – 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship Favorites, Sleepers, Schedule and TV Listings plus Expert Picks: The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference didn’t make much of splash on the national stage this season. Only three teams finished above 0.500 overall, and the conference didn’t have a single win against a team inside the top 25. Needless to say, the MEAC is going to be a one-bid conference in the upcoming NCAA tournament. The winner of the conference tournament is going to grab the automatic bid, and every other team is going to see its season come to an end.
The Favorite – 2012 MEAC Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
A tough out-of-conference schedule that featured games against Wisconsin, Indiana and Georgetown ended up helping the Savannah State Tigers (21-10) in the long run. The competition clearly prepared the Tigers for conference play, and they rolled to the MEAC regular season on title on the strength of 13 straight wins. Savannah State is far from flashy on the offensive end of the court, but its defense is by far the best in the conference, allowing less than 59 points per game. During the Tigers’ winning streak, not a single opponent has topped 60 points. If that trend continues, Savannah State is going to be tough to beat.
The Dark Horses – 2012 MEAC Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
Although the Norfolk State Spartans (22-9) finished a game back of Savannah State in the MEAC regular season standings, they did defeat the Tigers 60-58 early in the year. The Spartans are led by senior center Kyle O’Quinn. The big man leads the team in scoring (15.9) and rebounding (10.7), and he is blocking almost three shots a game and shooting almost 59 percent from the floor. O’Quinn gives the Spartans a weapon that few teams in the MEAC have at their disposal. He provides Norfolk State with a reliable scorer on offense, controls the boards on defense, and patrols the paint on defense. As long as the Spartans have O’Quinn, they have a shot at winning the conference tournament.
As bad as the Delaware State Hornets (15-13) were during out-of-conference play, they were equally impressive in MEAC play. The Hornets followed an eight-game losing streak with an eight-game winning streak, ultimately finishing third in the regular season standings with a 12-4 record in the MEAC. Delaware State doesn’t stand out on in any statistical category, but the Hornets have all the components of a balanced team. Jay Threatt is averaging more than six assists per game at the point, Marques Oliver is an above average shot blocker in the post, and Tahj Tate and Casey Walker provide perimeter firepower. The Hornets have proven they can win in conference play, and they are going to be a tough out in the MEAC tournament.
Sleeper Special – 2012 MEAC Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
Based on the numbers alone, the North Carolina Central Eagles (16-14) have the look of a team that should have been a factor for the MEAC regular season title. The Eagles were the top-scoring team in the conference and had the second-best defense. Senior forward Dominique Sutton is one of three players averaging more than 15 points per game. Inconsistent play on both ends of the court resulted in a fourth-place finish in the MEAC for North Carolina Central, but when the Eagles play up to their potential, they are as a good as any team in the MEAC. It only takes a few good games to win the conference tournament.
