2012 Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Odds and Predictions to Win 2012 CAA Tournament – 2012 CAA Championship Favorites, Sleepers, Schedule and TV Listings plus Expert Picks: Although the Colonial Athletic Association isn’t known for producing national powers, the conference has made plenty of noise during March Madness in recent years. Since 2006, the CAA has put two different teams in the Final Four. Needless to say, the conference has been a dream for bettors that like backing the underdogs come tournament time. That being said, the CAA will probably have just one representative in this year’s big dance, and it will be the winner of the conference tournament.
The Favorite – 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
No team in the CAA has more momentum entering the conference tournament than the Drexel Dragons (25-5). Drexel has reeled of 17 straight wins and counting, losing just once since the calendar flipped to 2012. Seven players see at least 20 minutes of action per game, and four players average in double figures. The Dragons’ depth has translated into a relentless intensity on the defensive end that has been stifling opponents all season. Drexel owns the top scoring defense in the CAA, allowing less than 56 points a game. The stout defense allows the Dragons to win games, even when their own shots aren’t falling. Defense carried Drexel to the CAA regular season crown, and it could easily bring them a tournament title, as well.
The Dark Horses – 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
After a miracle run to the Final Four last season, the VCU Rams (25-6) will probably have to win the CAA conference tournament just to return to the NCAA tournament. The Rams don’t have any signature victories to bolster their resume, and they have suffered from an inefficient offense throughout the year, shooting less than 41 percent as a team. Leading scorer Bradford Burgess epitomizes the problem, shooting less than 37 percent from the field. That being said, VCU finished just a game back of regular season champion Drexel in the CAA and lost to the Dragons by just six on the road. The Rams allow less than 60 points per game on defense, and if Burgess is knocking down some shots, a conference tournament title isn’t out of the question.
If not for two inexplicable losses to close the regular season, the George Mason Patriots (23-8) would have won a share of the CAA title. Instead, they finished third behind Drexel and VCU in the conference standings. More importantly, the Patriots lost to the Dragons and Rams during the regular season and will likely have to beat both to win the conference tournament. If that is going to happen, forward Ryan Pearson will have to play at a high level. The senior is leading the Patriots in scoring (17.8) and rebounding (8.5), and he is the only player averaging in double figures. If Pearson comes up big, George Mason could make a surprise run the CAA tournament.
Sleeper Special – 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
With a 17-12 record, the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens were a step behind the top teams in the CAA most of the year. However, they did win their final eight games of the regular season, giving the Fightin Blue Hens tons of momentum entering the conference tournament. Granted, Delaware didn’t knock off any of the top teams in the CAA during their streak, but with a little added confidence, the Fightin Blue Hens could be dangerous.
