2012 College Basketball Picks and Predictions: Top 5 Point Guards

1.      Lorenzo Brown, North Carolina State Wolfpack

The Wolfpack’s run to the Sweet 16 helped get Brown noticed at the end of last season, but a quick look at his numbers reveals that he was the real deal at the point guard spot even before March Madness. With his 6’5” frame, he has the body to do a lot of different things on the court, and he takes advantage of it. Last year, Brown averaged 12.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 1.8 steals. He can score, he can distribute, and he is an excellent perimeter defender because of his size and strength. Plain and simple, Brown does it all.

2.      Trey Burke, Michigan Wolverines

After flirting with the NBA following a stellar freshman campaign, Burke opted to return to Michigan for the 2012-13 season. Burke is lightning quick with the ball in his hands, and he can penetrate the lane as well as any point guard in the country. He is also comfortable taking big shots down the stretch of games, Last year, he averaged 14.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.6 rebounds while knocking down nearly two 3-pointers per game, and his numbers should only improve this year with Michigan’s loaded recruiting class.

3.      Isaiah Canaan, Murray State Racers

Entering his senior year, Canaan is a dark horse is candidate to lead the country in scoring any maybe capture some major awards. Last year, he averaged 19.0 pounds and 3.6 assists while knocking in three 3-pointers per game at a 45.6 percent clip. Needless to say, Canaan has plenty of range, but he can also get to the rim. Last season, he averaged almost six free throw attempts per game and shot 83.7 percent from the charity stripe. Throw in the fact that Canaan has improved his scoring, assists, three-point percentage and free throw attempts in every year of his career, and a monster year could be on tap for one of the most dynamic scorers in the country.

4.      Aaron Craft, Ohio State Buckeyes

While he doesn’t boast the impressive scoring totals of some of the other top point guards, Craft gets the job done in other ways. For starters, he has averaged almost five assists per game in both his seasons in Columbus. More importantly, Craft is the best perimeter defender in the country by a wide margin. He averaged 2.5 steals per game last year, and he can rattle even the best scorers with his constant pressure and pesky playing style. Craft is a floor general on the offensive end and will shut down the opponent’s best shooter on the other end. That’s a pretty good combination to have at the point guard spot.

5.      Vincent Council, Providence Friars

He has quietly developed into one of the best all-around players at the point guard position, including one of the top distributors. Council averaged 15.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 1.3 steals last year, carrying the load in a number of ways for the undermanned Friars. Providence is definitely facing an uphill battle in the Big East, but Council’s steady production and senior leadership will be a bright spot for the program throughout the 2012-13 season.
