2012 Big Ten Tournament Odds and Predictions to Win 2012 Big 10 Tournament – 2012 Big 10 Championship Favorites, Sleepers, Schedule and TV Listings plus Expert Picks: Considering there was a three-way tie for the regular season title, it goes without saying that the Big Ten was a competitive conference this season. In fact, the conference wasn’t only strong at the top, but the Big Ten turned out to be one of the deeper power conferences, as well. As many as eight teams could end up making the NCAA tournament, and five Big Ten teams are currently ranked in the top 15. With so many top teams all vying for the Big Ten tournament crown, it could end up being one of the best conference tournaments of the year.
The Favorite – 2012 Big 10 Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
A loss at home to Ohio State in the regular season finale cost the eighth-ranked Michigan State Spartans (24-7) the outright Big Ten title. That being said, the Spartans still have an excellent chance to win the conference tournament. Michigan State is physical on defense, dominates the boards, and has a legitimate star to turn to on offense. Forward Draymond Green is averaging a double-double this year, and he is the frontrunner for the Big Ten Player of the Year. More importantly, the beat the Buckeyes in Columbus and had a 15-point lead in the rematch before losing 72-70 on a buzzer beater. Michigan State is as battle tested as any team in the country, and Tom Izzo’s teams always seem to be at their best in March.
The Dark Horses – 2012 Big 10 Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
Thanks to a thrilling comeback victory in the regular season finale, the seventh-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes (25-6) grabbed a share of the Big Ten crown. Arguably the most-talented team in the conference, Ohio State was second in the Big Ten in scoring and had the second-best scoring defense, as well. Jared Sullinger, William Buford and Deshaun Thomas give the Buckeyes have three strong scoring options, and point guard Aaron Craft is one of the best perimeter defenders in the country. Despite all the talent, Ohio State has been up and down at times, dominating the likes of Duke and Indiana, while losing to Illinois and Michigan. When the Buckeyes are firing on all cylinders, they are a top-five team. They just have to remain consistent.
They are young, too reliant on the 3-point shot and small inside, but that didn’t stop the 13th-ranked Michigan Wolverines (23-8) from grabbing a share of the Big Ten regular season title. They knocked off Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan and Indiana during the course of the year, proving there is no Big Ten team they can’t defeat. Point guard Trey Burke and shooting guard Tim Hardaway Jr. lead the Wolverines’ guard-oriented attack, and the team’s love of the 3-point shot can allow them to put up points in bunches. Michigan won six of its last seven games entering the conference tournament, and after a surprisingly strong regular season, the Wolverines could continue to defy the odds.
Watching the 15-th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers (23-8) play basketball can makes your eyes bleed, but the team’s methodical, painfully slow offense is effective. The Badgers don’t put up many points on the offensive end, but they are by far the stingiest defensive unit, allowing less than 52 points per game. By slowing down the pace of the game and bleeding the clock, Wisconsin frustrates opponents and forces them into bad shots. The Badgers won’t blow anyone out, but their style of play allows them to stay within striking distance no matter the competition.
Sleeper Special – 2012 Big 10 Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
The Indiana Hoosiers (24-7) were the top-scoring team in the Big Ten and nearly unbeatable at home, knocking off the likes of Ohio State, Michigan State and Kentucky. However, Indiana struggled on the road, dropping six games. The road issues can be directly tied to the team’s inexperience, and the Hoosiers’ best player is freshman forward Cody Zeller. He has been nonexistent during road games at times, while scoring 20-plus points on a regular basis at Assembly Hall. The Big Ten tournament isn’t going to be played on Indiana’s home court, but it is being held in Indianapolis. While technically a neutral site, there should be plenty of Indiana fans in the stands.
