2012 Big Sky Tournament Odds and Predictions to Win 2012 Big Sky Tournament – 2012 Big Sky Tournament Favorites, Sleepers, Schedule and TV Listings plus Expert Picks: The Big Sky Conference was top heavy this year, with the two best teams finishing well ahead of the rest of the pack. That being said, the conference is likely going to get just one team in the NCAA tournament. One bad night by any team means an end to their season, and a bad night by one of the top teams could open the door for one of the underdogs.
The Favorite – 2012 Big Sky Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
A loss in the regular season finale cost the Weber State Wildcats (23-5) a Big Sky regular season title. However, the Wildcats are the top scoring team in the conference, averaging 78.1 points per game. They also have the best player in the conference in guard Damian Lillard. He is an offensive juggernaut and an all-around star. Lillard averages 24.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game, while hitting more than three 3-pointers per game. With Lillard leading the way, Weber State’s high-scoring offense makes them the team to beat in the conference tournament.
The Dark Horses – 2012 Big Sky Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
Thanks to a 12-game winning streak to close the regular season, the Montana Grizzlies (23-6) stormed to the Big Sky title. The Grizzlies boast the top defense in the conference, allowing less than 62 points per game. Montana’s stifling defense was on full display in the regular season finale against Weber State, when the Grizzlies held the high-scoring Wildcats to just 51 points. In fact, Montana held six of its final eight opponents to 60 points or less. As long as the Grizzlies are locking down opponents on defense, there is no reason they can’t back up their regular season title with a tournament title.
Although there was a big gap between the Portland State Vikings (16-13) and the top two teams, there a few reasons for the Vikings to be optimistic. Portland State ranks in the top 25 nationally in both points per game (76.4) and field goal percentage (48.3). Armed with the dynamic inside-outside combo of guard Charles Odum and forward Chehales Tapscott, the Vikings can keep up on the offensive end with just about any opponent. The two players combined to score 33.0 points per game, and both are shooting 53 percent from the field. Odum and Tapscott will both need to have a stellar tournament, but the Vikings won’t be overmatched in any matchup.
Sleeper Special – 2012 Big Sky Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
There are a lot of reasons that the Eastern Washington Eagles (14-16) couldn’t crack the .500 mark this season. They don’t play great defense, they shoot a terrible percentage on offense, and they don’t rebound well. Despite all the problems, the Eagles are dangerous in the Big Sky tournament. Eastern Washington has already attempted 761 3-pointers on the year, and any team that lives and dies by the 3-pointer is one hot shooting game away from an upset.
