2012 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Odds and Predictions to Win 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament – Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Favorites, Sleepers, Schedule and TV Listings plus Expert Picks: The Atlantic Sun Conference didn’t exactly wow on a national level this season. Not a single team defeated an opponent ranked in the AP Top 25, and Kennesaw State finished the year with a dismal 3-28 record. Needless to say, this conference will be sending just one representative to the NCAA tournament, and it will be the winner of the conference tournament. The teams in the Atlantic Sun are literally playing to extend their season one more game.
The Favorite – 2012 Atlantic Sun Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
Although not a single team in the conference had a statement win, the Belmont Bruins (24-7) had a statement loss to open the year, losing to Duke by just a single point. Belmont established itself as the premier team in the Atlantic Sun Conference early in the year and easily clinched the regular season title. The Bruins strength is their high-powered offense that ranks second in the country at 82.1 points per game. Nine players average more than nine points per game, and if the regular season was any indication, the Bruins have too much firepower for the rest of the conference.
The Dark Horses – 2012 Atlantic Sun Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
If there is going to be a team that steps up and challenges Belmont, it could be the Mercer Bears (21-10). Mercer knocked of major conference opponent Georgia Tech early in the year and took Seton Hall to overtime. More importantly, the Bears lost two games to Belmont by a combined five points, including a one-point loss in the regular season finale. Mercer has a deep team and a modest but efficient offense. Forward Jakob Gollon is one of several versatile players that has can score from the paint and the perimeter. By creating mismatches and controlling the tempo, Mercer could be a tough out in the conference tournament.
The USC Upstate Spartans (20-11) are one of only two Atlantic Sun Conference teams to have beaten Belmont this season. They are also the only team with a legitimate superstar player. Forward Torrey Craig is averaging 17.1 points and 7.9 rebounds, and the sophomore is as deadly from beyond the arc as he is in the post. Craig is the type of player that can take over a game, and while the Spartans struggle when he struggles, they can also make a run and win the conference tournament if Craig goes on a tear.
Sleeper Special – 2012 Atlantic Sun Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
At 16-13, the East Tennessee State Buccaneers don’t exactly have a record that strikes fear in opponents. However, the closed the regular season with three straight wins, and they have the second-best scoring defense in the conference. The Buccaneers’ offense can leave a lot to be desired at times, but if guard Adam Sollazo has a strong tournament, East Tennessee State could cause some problems for the rest of the conference. Sollazo is averaging a team-best 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists, and the Buccaneers will need his all-around game to back up the team’s stellar defense.
