Deontay Wilder worked with Mark Breland since his first year as a professional boxer but he decided to part ways with him. Breland, a retired world champion who won a gold medal in boxing at the 1984 Olympics, has been credited with teaching Wilder how to be a boxing champ.
Wilder told Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole on Monday that is impossible for him to work with Breland in the future after he threw in the towel during the 7th round of the WBC Heavyweight title fight against Tyson Fury last Saturday.
“I understand he was looking out for me and trying to do what he felt was right, but this is my life and my career and he has to accept my wishes,” Wilder said.
“I’d rather die in the ring than have the towel thrown in,” Wilder told The Athletic. “I’m a warrior.”
The 34-year-old blamed his ring-walk costume for his loss against Fury. He said that his costume was too heavy and that “didn’t have the legs” for the fight.
“He didn’t hurt me at all, but the simple fact is my uniform was way too heavy for me. I didn’t have no legs from the beginning of the fight… I didn’t think it was going to be that heavy. It weighed 40lbs with the helmet and all the batteries,” Wilder said.
Wilder also blamed referee Kenny Bayless as he believes that Fury landed punches to the back of his head repeatedly, even after Bayless said in the pre-fight instructions that infractions like that would lead to point deductions and disqualification. Wilder reportedly plans to exercise his rematch clause for a third fight against Tyson Fury.
