2017 NFC East Division Predictions and Odds to Win
1. New York Giants(+265 odds to win NFC East at Bovada) – The New York Giants went 11-5 last season to finish in 2nd place in the NFC East but appear poised to claim the division this season behind a well balanced team that can put up points and defend with the best of them. The Giants look to have a team that can realistically compete to win the NFC Title this season and get back to the Super Bowl as the offense should be improved with the addition of 1st round pick, tight end Evan Engram out of Ole Miss. Engram should give quarterback Eli Manning the security blanket he’s lacked to keep the chains moving and improve the Giants offense from the 25th overall unit it was in the NFL last season. Defensively, the Giants were 10th overall in the NFL last season and should be just as good if not slightly better this season with 2nd round draft pick, defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson out of Alabama, expected to fortify a front four that should cause havoc on opposing quarterbacks and ground games.
2. Dallas Cowboys(+122 odds to win NFC East at Bovada) – The Dallas Cowboys were a big surprise last season going 13-3 and earning the #1 overall seed in the NFC Playoffs. The Cowboys hit the jackpot in the 2016 NFL Draft as they found their quarterback and running back of the future in Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot. Having said all that, we look for the Cowboys to take a step back this season as Prescott will not be able to surprise anyone with a full season of game tape on him and the Cowboys lost a lot in free agency. The Cowboys are certainly still more than talented enough to get back to the NFC Playoffs and potentially still win the NFC East but we see them going 10-6 and earning a NFC Wild Card. The Cowboys offense should be one of the top units in the NFL again this season after finishing 5th in total offense last season but we think the defense will take a small step back from last year’s unit that ranked 14th overall in the NFL.
3. Philadelphia Eagles(+400 odds to win NFC East at Bovada) – The Philadelphia Eagles went 7-9 last season but found a quarterback to build around long-term as Carson Wentz proved he has the talent and toughness to be a big time signal caller in the near future. The Eagles are definitely headed in the right direction and a surprise run at a NFC Playoff bid this season is not out of the question. The Eagles bolstered their offense by signing wide receivers Alshon Jeffrey and Torrey Smith as well as running back LeGarrette Blount in free agency. They also improved their defense with free agent signings in defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan and defensive end Chris Long while using their top three NFL Draft picks on defensive players. The Eagles had a tremendous offseason improving their overall talent and should finish over .500 this season barring any unforeseen serious injuries.
4. Washington Redskins(+400 odds to win NFC East at Bovada) – The Redskins went 8-7-1 last season but really folded when the pressure was on as they lost their last two home games against Carolina and the NY Giants when all they needed was one win to secure a NFC Wild Card bid. The Redskins offense was outstanding last season finishing 3rd overall in the NFL but did lose star wide out Desean Jackson in free agency. However, the Redskins did a good job in find a replacement as they signed wide out Terrelle Pryor who is younger and potentially has more upside than Jackson in the Redskins offense. Defensively, the Skins must improve from last season’s horrendous unit that finished 28th in the NFL. The Skins did land a steal in the draft as defensive tackle Jonathan Allen fell into their lap as he was projected to be a Top 5 pick but slid all the way to the Skins at #17. We also like the Skins 2nd and 3rd rd draft picks on the defensive side of the ball but we still have the Skins finishing 4th in the NFC East because the division is the toughest in the NFL and the 3 teams above them are all very good.
