2012 Virginia 529 College Savings 250 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Favorites and Sleepers to Win Virginia 529 College Savings 250: While several Cup regulars have participated in the Nationwide Series fall race at Richmond over the years, the trend has subsided a bit since the inception of the Chase. Cup regulars tend to focus more on the regular season finale of their own series, as well as the upcoming playoffs. This year is no exception, and a only a handful of drivers will be pulling double duty this weekend.
Last fall, two of the series’ all-time greats went head to head most of the night. In fact, Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch combined to lead 234 of the 250 laps. Edwards had the car to beat in the early stages, leading a race-high 160 laps. However, Busch eventually took control of the race, leading 74 laps and holding off Edwards for the win. For Busch, it was his fourth Nationwide win at the track.
Earlier this year, Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch had the dominant cars most of the night. Harvick was untouchable early and led a race-high 158 laps. However, he gave way to Busch later in the event, who led 68 laps in his own right. After finally wrestling the top spot from Harvick, Busch nearly gave away the lead, as well. Denny Hamlin made a hard charge at Busch in the closing laps, but he chose not to bump his way by and could never complete the pass. It was Busch’s first Nationwide win at Richmond and the first win for Kyle Busch Motorsports in the Nationwide Series.
The Favorites – 2012 Virginia 529 College Savings 250 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
He made his Richmond debut in the Nationwide Series earlier this year, and Kurt Busch certainly made a good first impression. He led 68 of the 250 laps and held off a furious charge from Denny Hamlin in the closing laps to pick up the win. If he was able win at RIR in his very first Nationwide start at the track, it’s tough to bet against a season sweep for Busch.
No driver in this weekend’s field is more familiar with Victory Lane at Richmond than Kevin Harvick. He has five wins at the short track, and all have come since the start of the 2002 season. Harvick has made 18 starts at Richmond during the stretch, compiling a 5.8 average finish and finishing eighth or better 15 times. Earlier this year he led a race-high 158 laps and finished third. He knows how to get to the front and how to close the deal at RIR.
Virginia native Denny Hamlin knows how to get around at his home-state track. In addition to his second-place finish at Richmond earlier this year, he has finished seventh or better six times in his last seven starts at the track. More importantly, he is a two-time winner at the track in the Nationwide Series.
The Dark Horses – 2012 Virginia 529 College Savings 250 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
Current point leader Elliott Sadler has yet to win a Nationwide race at his home-state track, but he has enjoyed plenty of success. He has finished sixth or better in five of his last eight starts at Richmond, including three straight. In fact, Sadler has a 5.3 average finish in his last three starts at the track. As well as he has been running at RIR the last few years, he could finally give the home crowd something to cheer about this weekend.
Fresh off his fourth win of 2012, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. could keep the victories coming this weekend at Richmond. He is still looking for a win at the short track, but he has finished fourth or better in three of the last four races. Stenhouse finished third at Richmond last fall and fourth earlier this year. He could break through and win at any time.
The Sleepers – 2012 Virginia 529 College Savings 250 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
Since finishing dead last in his first-ever Nationwide start at Richmond, Sam Hornish Jr. has been steadily improving. He finished 15th in his second start, seventh in his third start and fifth in his most recent start earlier this year. The trend of improvement is definitely encouraging, and if it continues, a win could be on tap for Hornish sooner rather than later.
Ryan Blaney was a relative unknown when he showed up at Richmond earlier this year. After his surprising seventh-place finish, some big teams took notice. When he makes his return trip to the track this weekend, he will do so behind the wheel of the Penske Racing No. 22 machine. With some of the best equipment in the series on his side, Blaney could make even more of a splash than he did in April.
Big Name to Avoid – 2012 Virginia 529 College Savings 250 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
While Justin Allgaier has never been bad at Richmond, he has never been a serious threat to win at the track either. He has actually finished in the top 15 in his last six starts at RIR, but he has just one top-five during the stretch and has finished eighth or worse in his other five starts. Allgaier should have a solid night on Friday, but don’t expect him to be battling for the win.
