2012 Quicken Loans 400 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Quicken Loans 400 Favorites and Sleepers at Michigan International Speedway: NASCAR betting odds to win the 2012 Quicken Loans 400 this Sunday, June 17th at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan have been posted at all the major Las Vegas and best online sportsbooks with Jimmie Johnson having been installed as the 6/1 +600 favorite to win the 2012 Quicken Loans 400.
This weekend, the Cup Series heads to Michigan International Speedway. The 2.0-mile, D-shaped oval has one of the widest racing surfaces, and three-wide racing is the norm. While a solid aero package is important at the track, no car gets to Victory Lane without a powerful engine under the hood. Of course, it is sometimes the most efficient engine that allows a driver to win the race. Michigan is notorious for fuel mileage finishes, which opens the door for occasional upsets.
Last June, Greg Biffle and Kyle Busch controlled the action most of the afternoon. The two combined to lead 127 of the 200 laps, with Biffle leading a race-high 68 laps. However, a late caution jumbled the running order, putting Biffle and Busch back in traffic. Meanwhile, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth used tire strategy to grab clean air and pull away from the field. Kenseth made several runs at Hamlin for the lead, but although he closed to the back bumper of the No. 11 several, times Hamlin was able to hang on for the win.
In the return trip to the track in August, Biffle again led the most laps, only to come unraveled in the final stages of the race. Jeff Gordon had a strong run, as well, but the race ultimately boiled down to a duel between Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson. Both drivers were looking for their first win at Michigan, and in the end, Busch pulled out a rather comfortable win over the five-time champ.
The Favorites – 2012 Quicken Loans 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
Defending race winner Denny Hamlin has been on a roll at Michigan. He has five top-10s in his last six starts at the track, picking up four finishes of third or better during the stretch. Hamlin has two wins and a second-place finish in his last four starts at MIS, and his recent run of dominance at the 2.0-mile oval makes him one of the frontrunners this weekend.
After taking over the point lead last weekend at Pocono, Matt Kenseth will set his sights on a third-career victory at Michigan this weekend. His 9.0 average finish in the last 20 races at the track is the second best in the series, and he has 10 top-five finishes during the stretch. Kenseth finished second at Michigan last June, and he will be looking to seal the deal this time around.
The Dark Horses – 2012 Quicken Loans 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
It took a while for Kyle Busch to get dialed in at Michigan, and his career average finish is still just 15.5 at MIS. However, he looked plenty comfortable at the track last season. After a third-place finish in the June race, Busch won the August event at the track to pick up his first Cup Series win at Michigan. He will try to make it back-to-back victories at the track this weekend, and after his performance in 2011, it’s tough to bet against him.
Preseason championship favorite Carl Edwards just can’t seem to recapture the elite form he had in 2011. That could change this weekend when the series heads to Michigan. Edwards leads all active drivers with an 8.2 average finish at the track, and he has finished worse than 12th only twice in 15 career starts. More importantly, he is a two-time winner at the track and has finished in the top five nine times. It has been a slow start for Edwards, but he could erupt this weekend.
Sleeper Specials – 2012 Quicken Loans 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
Veteran Mark Martin nearly won last weekend at Pocono, and he could be back in the mix for a victory this weekend, as well. He won the June race at Michigan as recently as 2009, and last year, he finished ninth and fourth in two starts at the track. The track tends to have long green flag runs, and Martin’s smooth style allows him to work his way to the front without straining his equipment. Expect him to have plenty left to challenge for the win down the stretch.
Although he is definitely a true longshot, Trevor Bayne has a chance to make some noise this weekend. His Wood Brothers Racing team gets equipment from Roush Fenway Racing, and no organization has been better at Michigan than RFR. Jack Roush’s three current drivers all have multiple wins at MIS, and all three rank in the top five in terms of average finish in the last 20 races at the track. Bayne will have the same equipment to work with this weekend, and he will also have a little experience under his belt after making a pair of starts at the track in 2011.
Name to Avoid – 2012 Quicken Loans 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks
He hasn’t been bad at Michigan, but Clint Bowyer hasn’t looked a driver capable of winning the track either. He has finished in the top 15 in five of his last six starts at the track, but he has never finished better than eighth at Michigan. Betting on a driver to win at a track where they have never even had a top-five finish is a recipe for disaster, even if the driver is a proven race winner like Bowyer.
