Formally a flat track where passing was difficult, Las Vegas Motor Speedway has undergone several changes to its layout over the years. LVMS is still a 1.5-mile track, but progressive banking has increased the speed and created multiple grooves. As a result, recent races have featured some more exciting finishes and some memorable wrecks. The changes have also lifted Jimmie Johnson’s stranglehold on Victory Lane. Johnson won three straight races at the track from 2005 to 2007, but he has just one win in four starts on the new surface.

Last season, Tony Stewart established himself as the man to beat early in the afternoon. However, a pit road speeding penalty sent him to the back of the pack and forced him to use several two-tire stops to regain track position. Despite the trouble, Stewart still managed to lead the most laps, but on the final stop, Carl Edwards beat him off pit road. Stewart was never able to get back around Edwards, and Edwards went to Victory Lane.

The Favorites – 2012 Kobalt Tools 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

His 10.6 average finish at Las Vegas is the best in the series, and Jimmie Johnson is no stranger to Victory Lane at the 1.5-mile track. He is a four-time winner at LVMS, picking up all four victories in his last seven starts at the track. No driver has found Victory Lane at Vegas with more regularity than Johnson, and even without his suspended crew chief Chad Knaus, he should be a serious threat to add to his win total this weekend.

Roush Fenway Racing teammates Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth have both enjoyed plenty of success at Vegas over the years. Both are two-time winners at the track, and both rank in the top five in terms of average finish. Considering he is the defending winner of this weekend’s event, a slight edge has to go to Edwards when comparing the two drivers. However, both should be battling near the front of the field Sunday.

The Dark Horses – 2012 Kobalt Tools 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Although Las Vegas Motor Speedway is one of the few tracks where Tony Stewart has never won, he could be ending the drought as soon as this weekend. He finished seventh at the track in 2010, and last year, he led the most laps and finished second. If not for a pit road speeding penalty, Stewart would have gotten the monkey off his back last season. Expect a very motivated Stewart to try and make amends this weekend.

The 1.5-mile tracks have always been kind to Greg Biffle, and Las Vegas is no exception. He has finished in the top 10 in three of his last four starts at the track and has five top-10 finishes in his last seven starts. More importantly, Biffle appears to have put his 2011 slump behind him, opening the 2012 campaign with back-to-back top-five efforts. His big year could continue this weekend with a trip to Victory Lane.

Sleeper Specials – 2012 Kobalt Tools 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

In three starts at Las Vegas, Joey Logano has a pair of top-15 finishes, including a sixth-place effort in 2010. More importantly, he has opened the year with back-to-back top-10 finishes, signaling a possible breakout year for the highly-touted driver. Joe Gibbs Racing as a whole seems to be improved from last season, which should only help Logano’s chances of running well Sunday.

Marcos Ambrose has steadily improved in every start at Las Vegas. He finished 20th in his track debut, 14th in 2010 and fourth last year. At the time, it was his best career finish at a 1.5-mile track. Overall, Ambrose made big strides at the intermediate ovals last season, and if he continues to improve, the next step is a trip to Victory Lane.

Drivers to Avoid – 2012 Kobalt Tools 400 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Despite being a Nevada native, Kurt Busch has never had a lot of success at Las Vegas. In 11 starts at the track, he has just three top-10 finishes and only a single top-five. Throw in the fact that Busch is stuck driving for a single-car, underfunded team in 2012, and his home-state fans probably aren’t going to have much to cheer about.

Last season, Brad Keselowski exploded during the second half of the year, winning three races and making the chase. However, he has never had anything close to a decent run at Vegas. In three career starts, he has yet to crack the top 25. While Keselowski should improve on his dismal numbers this weekend, it is a stretch to think he can suddenly contend for the win at one of his worst tracks.
