Bristol Motor Speedway is no longer the one-groove bullring that became famous for some of the most intense bumping and banging in the Cup Series. That being said, putting 43 cars on a half-mile track can still lead to some exciting moments and short tempers. Bristol may race a little differently than it has in the past, but it is still one of the most popular stops on the schedule for both drivers and fans.

Last March, three of the sports heavyweights battled it out all afternoon. Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson combined to lead 335 of the 500 laps, with Johnson leading a race-high 164. However, Busch had the car to beat in the late stages of the race and was able to hold off Edwards and Johnson for the victory.

In the August event, Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth emerged as the cars to be beat early in the night. Both drivers led more than 100 laps, and Gordon led a race-high 206. Ironically, neither driver was able to get to Victory Lane after pit strategy intervened. Brad Keselowski and Martin Truex Jr. opted for no tires with almost 100 laps remaining and were able to hold off the drivers on fresh tires the rest of way. Keselowski scored the win and Truex came home second.

The Favorites – 2012 Food City 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

There is plenty for bettors to love about Kyle Busch. He is the defending winner of this weekend’s race and is a five-time winner at Bristol for his career. More importantly, four of those wins have come in the last six races at the track. No driver has dominated Thunder Valley in recent years more than Busch.

Even without his crew chief, Jimmie Johnson is piling up top-five finishes this season, and he should continue to run near the front this weekend. He has finished eighth or better in four of his last five starts at Bristol, winning at the track in 2010. Last year, Johnson finished third and fourth in two starts, and he should be a threat to win again Sunday.

The Dark Horses – 2012 Food City 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Not only is Matt Kenseth a two-time winner at Bristol, but he has been consistently finishing near the front the last several seasons. He has five straight top-10 finishes at the track, and he has 16 top-10 finishes in his last 20 starts. Kenseth is a safe bet to be in contention Sunday, and after finishes of fourth and sixth at Bristol in 2011, a win is a real possibility.

He has opened the year with three straight top-five finishes, and it seems like only a matter of time before Greg Biffle gets to Victory Lane. It could happen this weekend at Bristol, where he has finished eighth or better in four of his last five starts. Biffle has the best average finish (11.8) of any driver without a win in Thunder Valley. He could change that this weekend.

Sleeper Specials – 2012 Food City 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Outside of the road courses, Bristol may just be Marcos Ambrose’s best track. He has four top-15 finishes in six career starts at the track, including three top-10 efforts. Ambrose has finished as high as third at Bristol, making the track a good bet for the site of his first career oval track victory.

With three straight top-10 finishes and six in his last seven starts at Bristol, Ryan Newman is no stranger to being competitive at the half-mile track. He just needs a breakthrough performance, and coming off a top-five effort last weekend, it could come as early as Sunday. Even though he is winless at Bristol, bettors shouldn’t overlook Newman this weekend.

Drivers to Avoid – 2012 Food City 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

He won last weekend at Las Vegas and is the defending series champ, but Tony Stewart could be a serious bust for bettors this weekend. It has been more than a decade since he has won at Bristol, and he has been awful at the track in recent years. Stewart has finished outside the top 15 in five of his last six starts, finishing outside the top 25 three times.

Clint Bowyer has earned his reputation as a short track ace, but Bristol has been getting the best of him lately. In four of his last five starts at the track, he has failed to crack the top 20. In three of those starts, Bowyer has finished outside the top 25.
