Sour Cream Dips 400.
A trip to Michigan International Speedway should have bettors smiling for a couple of reasons. For starters, the track’s wide racing surface makes passing relatively easy, allowing the drivers with the fastest cars to work their way to the front. As a result, the favorites heading into the race tend to run very well. In addition, the Michigan is known to have a fuel mileage race every now and then, allowing for some upset winners. As recently as 2009, both races at MIS were decided by fuel mileage with the leader with three laps to go running out of gas before the finish. In short the track offers a healthy mixture of predictability and surprises.
Last June, the race quickly became a showdown between two-time Michigan winner Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin. The two combined to lead 183 of the 200 laps with Hamlin leading 123 on his way to the win. After swapping the lead with Busch early, Hamlin enjoyed massive leads throughout the second half of the race, and even a late restart couldn’t derail him. He cruised to his first career win at the track.
When the series returned to the track in August, Hamlin had his eyes on a season sweep. He used a two-tire stop to grab the lead on the final restart, but Kevin Harvick was able to catch and pass him in the closing laps to secure his first win at the track. Greg Biffle and Tony Stewart were the other major contenders throughout the afternoon, and Biffle actually led a race-high 66 laps.
2011 Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400: The Favorites
No active driver has a better average finish at Michigan than Carl Edwards. His 6.3 mark is more than three positions better than the next closest driver, and in 13 career starts at the track, he has 11 top-10 finishes. More importantly, Edwards is a two-time winner at MIS, and he has finished fourth or better in four of his last five starts.
If you are looking for consistency at Michigan, look no further than Matt Kenseth. During the past 10 seasons, he has piled up 18 top-15 finishes in 20 starts, including a pair of wins. Kenseth has finished in the top five in half of those starts, including four top-five runs in his last seven outings at the track.
Defending race winner Denny Hamlin established himself as one of the top drivers at Michigan with his performance in 2010. He followed up his win in June with a second-place run in July, giving him three top-three finishes in his last four starts at the track. For his career, he averages a top-10 finish and has finished outside the top 15 only once in 10 starts.
2011 Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400: The Dark Horses
Not only did Greg Biffle lead the most laps at Michigan last August, he finished in the top five for the third time in his last five starts at the track. He has also picked up 10 top-10 finishes, including a pair of wins, in 16 career starts at the track. The only thing that keeps him from joining his Roush Fenway Racing teammates Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth as favorites is Biffle’s tendency to have a random bad finish every now and then.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. last won a Cup Series race at Michigan in 2008, and the track could end up being the place where he snaps his long winless drought. He has finished in the top 15 in eight of his last 10 starts at the track, including four top-five finishes. Junior has been running well lately, and running well enough to win races.
2011 Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400: Sleeper Specials
For as much as he has struggled in 2011, Joey Logano still has to be considered a threat at Michigan. He has finished in the top 10 in his last three starts at the track, and the 2.0-mile tracks have always been some of his best. Logano could snap his slump in a big way this weekend.
The last time Brian Vickers started a race at Michigan, he went to Victory Lane. He didn’t get a chance to defend his win because a medical issue cost him most of the 2010 season, but he will return to the track this weekend. Vickers has finished in the top 10 in his last five starts at the track, making him an under the radar threat.
2011 Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400: Big Names to Avoid
He is normally one of the favorites at just about any track, but Michigan is an exception for Jimmie Johnson. He has just two top-five finishes in 18 career starts, and he has never won a race at the track. Johnson is more than capable of grabbing a top-10 at the track, but bettors aren’t picking the five-time champ for top-10 finishes. It is all about the wins.
He has failed to crack the top 10 in each of his last four starts, and Kyle Busch has never been at his best at Michigan. He has just a single top-five finish in 12 career starts, and he has never gone to Victory Lane. Like Jimmie Johnson, bettors are picking Busch to get a win, and that is something he hasn’t been able to do at MIS.
