2012 SEC Football Championship Odds and Predictions – Favorites and Sleepers

2012 SEC Football Championship Odds and Predictions: Favorites and Sleepers – In the world of college football today, there is the SEC and everyone else. The Southeastern Conference is without question the dominant league in the country, and it has seven consecutive national titles to prove it. In fact, SEC teams are 8-1 in BCS title games, and the conference’s only loss came last season when two SEC teams played each other. Players from the conference have enjoyed plenty of success, as well. Two of the last three and three of the last five Heisman Trophy winners have played in the SEC. At this point, the best teams and the best players reside in the SEC, and betting against an eighth straight national title for the conference isn’t wise.

The Favorites – 2012 SEC Football Championship Odds and Predictions

They came up just one win short of a perfect season and a national title last year, but the LSU Tigers are geared up for another title run. Tyrann Mathieu headlines the defense after being named a Heisman finalist last year, but the Tigers have the best defensive front and best secondary in the country. This year’s unit should be on par if not better than last year’s group that ranked second in the country in points and yards allowed per game. Offensively, a mean and nasty offensive line will pave the way for a quartet of talented running backs. Meanwhile, transfer quarterback Zach Mettenberger should provide more balance to the offense thanks to his ability to make plays from the pocket. Add it up, and Les Miles’ bunch has more than enough talent to win the SEC and a national title.

The defending national champion Alabama Crimson Tide lost plenty of talent on both sides of the ball, but Nick Saban doesn’t rebuild. He reloads. The next wave of four and five-star recruits are waiting to jump into the starting lineup and become stars. While the defense probably won’t put up the numbers that last year’s record-setting unit did, scoring points on the Crimson Tide still won’t be easy. On offense, quarterback A.J. McCarron is coming off a breakout performance in last season’s BCS title game, and an arsenal of talented running backs should find plenty of space behind the top offensive line in the country. Defending Outland Trophy winner Barrett Jones leads a group that should absolutely maul opponents. Running the ball and playing defense has led the Crimson Tide to a pair of national titles in the last three years. The formula will put Alabama in the mix again.

The Dark Horses – 2012 SEC Football Championship Odds and Predictions

While Alabama and LSU fight it out in the SEC West, the Georgia Bulldogs could be busy winning the SEC East for the second year in a row. Georgia’s defense will be one of the best in the country. Nose tackle John Jenkins leads the biggest three-man front in the country, and defending SEC sack leader Jarvis Jenkins is one of four returning linebackers. All-American safety Bacarri Rambo is back for a secondary that led the conference in interceptions last year. Offensively, quarterback Andrew Murray is going to go down as the best QB in school history, and he is one of the top pro-style passers in the country. Murray alone should make sure the Bulldogs score plenty of points, and even though running back Isaiah Crowell was dismissed from the team, five-star recruit Keith Marshall is waiting to jump into the starting lineup. The Bulldogs don’t face LSU, Alabama or Arkansas this year, making their path back to the SEC title game is fairly smooth.

Coming off a school-record 11 wins last year and a trip to the conference title game the year before, the South Carolina Gamecocks will try to take the next step this season and win the SEC. Even though Steve Spurrier made his name as an offensive guru, defensive has been the calling card of South Carolina’s success. This year’s unit will be led by Devin Taylor and Jadeveon Clowney, who are two of the top defensive ends in the country. Offensively, the Gamecocks have one of their best groups of the Spurrier era. Running back Marcus Lattimore is a workhorse and a Heisman candidate, and quarterback Connor Shaw has shown plenty of promise. South Carolina has more than enough talent to rival Georgia in the SEC East, but having LSU and Arkansas on their schedule won’t make things easy.

The Sleeper – 2012 SEC Football Championship Odds and Predictions

Everything was falling into place for the Arkansas Razorbacks. They lost just two games last year, and the losses came to the two teams that played for the national title. A SEC title and maybe more seemed like a real possibility in 2012-13, but then came Bobby Petrino’s bizarre motorcycle wreck and firing. There is no real way of telling how the players will react to the distraction, but at the very least, it casts some uncertainty on the situation. On the plus side, quarterback Tyler Wilson is back and is on the verge of becoming one of the country’s elite. Not to mention that the Razorbacks’ high-powered offense should be even better this season with the return of running back Knile Davis from injury. Arkansas is just as talented this year as it was a year ago when it was arguably the third-best team in the country. Unfortunately, the two teams that were better still reside in the same division of the same conference as the Razorbacks. Games against LSU and Alabama will decide the season.
