2012 West Coast Conference Tournament Odds and Predictions to Win 2012 WCC Tournament – 2012 WCC Tournament Favorites, Sleepers, Schedule and TV Listings plus Expert Picks: Unlike many of the mid-majors, the West Coast Conference can probably put three teams in the NCAA tournament, regardless of who win the conference tournament. However, teams can eliminate any questions about whether or not they will be a part of the field of 68 by winning the tournament. Not to mention the fact that the eventual winner could end up grabbing a decent seed for the big dance. Add it up, and a very competitive West Coast Conference tournament could be on tap.
The Favorite – 2012 West Coast Conference Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
Although they lost to ranked opponents Baylor and Murray State, the Saint Mary’s Gaels (25-5) took care of business in West Coast Conference play, snapping Gonzaga’s stranglehold. The Gaels have earned a top-25 ranking of their own, and they will now look to a conference tournament title to their regular season crown. Balance has been the key for Saint Mary’s this season, and with Matthew Dellavedova scoring from the outside and Rob Jones scoring from the inside, the Gaels rank inside the top 40 in both points per game and field goal percentage. Saint Mary’s doesn’t have many off nights, and the Gaels consistent play should translate well into the conference tournament.
The Dark Horses – 2012 West Coast Conference Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
The Gonzaga Bulldogs (24-5) are used to playing Cinderella in the NCAA tournament. This year, they will have to get started a little earlier than normal. The Bulldogs missed out on the regular season West Coast Conference title, but they did split the season series with eventual champ Saint Mary’s. More importantly, Gonzaga has an efficient offense and the second-best scoring defense in the conference. With out-of-conference wins against Notre Dame, Arizona and Xavier, the Bulldogs are battle tested and should be ready to handle the pressure of tournament time. The team’s extensive March Madness experience is a definite edge this time of year.
There isn’t a team in the West Coast Conference with as much offensive firepower as the BYU Cougars (24-7). In fact, the Cougars rank 12th in the country in scoring, and they shoot a strong percentage and rank in the top 25 in rebounding, as well. Led by leading-scorer Noah Hartsock, BYU has four players averaging at least 11.5 points. If the Cougars can control the tempo and force opponents to play in high-scoring games, their offensive firepower could end up carrying them to a WCC tournament title.
Sleeper Special – 2012 West Coast Conference Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
Despite seeming rather unimpressive by the numbers, Loyola Marymount Lions (19-10) have reason to be optimistic heading into the West Coast Conference tournament. For starters, the Lions appeared to improve as the year went on, culminating in a 15-point blowout win against regular season champ Saint Mary’s in mid-February. Anthony Ireland and Drew Viney are both scoring more than 15 points per game this season, and as a team, the Lions have plenty of options from the perimeter. Inconsistencies aside, Loyola Marymount knows it can beat any team in the conference if it is playing well. At the very least, the Lions are worth keeping an eye on.
