2012 Southeastern Conference Tournament Odds and Predictions to Win 2012 SEC Tournament – 2012 SEC Championship Favorites, Sleepers, Schedule and TV Listings plus Expert Picks: While the Southeastern Conference has ruled the college football world for more than half a decade, the success hasn’t translated from the gridiron to the basketball court. Granted, the Kentucky Wildcats are one of the elite programs in the nation, but as a whole, the SEC isn’t a powerhouse conference. In fact, only three teams are locks to make this year’s NCAA tournament. A couple of more teams could sneak in the field, but it will likely take a win or two during the SEC tournament to seal the deal.
The Favorite – 2012 SEC Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
Considering that the Kentucky Wildcats (30-1) are the No. 1 team in the country and went undefeated in SEC play during the regular season, they are no doubt the favorites to win the conference tournament, as well. Kentucky leads SEC in both points scored and are second in points allowed. The Wildcats also rank in the top 20 nationally in points per game and rebounds per game, and they rank in the top 10 in field goal percentage. Led by shot blocker extraordinaire Anthony Davis, five players average more than 10 points a game for the Wildcats, and they are one of the most athletic and talented teams in the country. Kentucky’s youth didn’t cause any problems during the regular season, and it isn’t likely to be an issue in the SEC tournament either.
The Dark Horses – 2012 SEC Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
The 19th-ranked Florida Gators (22-9) are the only other SEC team currently ranked in the top 25. Powered by one of the better backcourts in the country, the Gators bring a high-powered offense to the table. Florida ranks second in the conference and 23rd in the country in points per game, and guards Kenny Boynton, Erving Walker and Bradley Beal are all averaging more than 12 points per game. While Florida has plenty of firepower on the perimeter, forward Patric Young is really the team’s only reliable post option. With a lack of depth inside, the Gators can live and die with the 3-point shot at times. When the shots are falling, Florida can compete and beat just about any team in the country. When they are shooting blanks, Florida struggles to win games.
Although the Vanderbilt Commodores (21-10) never lived up to expectations this season, they do have one of the best scoring combos in the SEC. Guard John Jenkins is averaging 20.0 points per game, and forward Jeffery Taylor is averaging more than 17 points per game. Both players can score from anywhere on the court, and Jenkins is one of the deadliest long-range threats in the country. He has connected on 118 3-pointers this season, shooting more than 46 percent from beyond the arc. Jenkins and Taylor were a big part of the reason why the Commodores opened the year as a top-10 team. Vanderbilt has underwhelmed thus far, but with two star players on the offensive end, they could catch fire and make a run in the conference tournament.
Sleeper Special – 2012 SEC Tournament Odds, Predictions and Expert Picks
After being ranked in the top 25 early in the year, the Alabama Crimson Tide (20-10) hit a rough patch during conference play. As a result, Alabama enters the SEC tournament with its NCAA tournament chances in doubt. Still, the Crimson Tide did finish the regular season by winning four of its final five games, and Alabama also boasts the stingiest defense in the conference. The Crimson Tide is an athletic, physical team, and while Alabama struggles to find consistent offense at times, the defense comes to play almost every game. At the very least, the Crimson Tide will be a tough out.
