2019 Gander RV 400 Expert Picks – Value Bets and Sleepers at Pocono Raceway: The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series makes its second stop of the year at Pocono Raceway this weekend, and while a small group of big names have been dominant here, the track’s massive, 2.5-mile layout does help create conditions for the occasional upset.
Since the track is so big, drivers can actually pit under green without losing a lap. This allows crew chiefs to short pit, similar to the strategy used at a road course, and hope for a caution to force the rest of the field to stop. Track position is huge at Pocono, and if someone can steal it by pitting early, catching a timely caution and stretching fuel, an upset could be in the cards.

Value Bets
Erik Jones (20/1)
He has had some bad luck lead to some really bad finishes this year, but Jones has shown as much promise as any young driver in the series. He has seven finishes of eighth or better in the last 10 races this year, and he has four third-place finishes in that span. Jones has also been excellent at Pocono, logging four top-10s in five starts and notching back-to-back top-five finishes. He has even led laps in three of his five Pocono starts. Jones is my favorite value bet this weekend.
Kyle Larson (20/1)
Larson has brought a checkers-or-wreckers attitude into this season, and while the style has led to far too many crashes, he has shown the speed to contend for wins. One of his best runs came at Pocono back in June when he led the second-most laps (35) and won both Stage 1 and Stage 2 before crashing on a late restart while running in the top five. Larson ranks fourth in points scored over the last 10 races at Pocono, so he is no stranger to strong runs at this place. After flirting with the win in June, I like him at 20/1 in the return trip this weekend.
Kurt Busch (25/1)
He always seems to be undervalued by oddsmakers, but the veteran is an absolute wheelman and one of the best in the business at Pocono. Busch is a three-time winner at “The Tricky Triangle” for his career, and he has finished second on five other occasions. He ranks in the top five in driver point scored in the last 10 races here, so it’s not like he’s slowing down, and Busch led double-digit laps in the July race last year. I’ll take this resume at 25/1 any day of the week.
William Byron (80/1)
Dipping into more of a lottery ticket, Byron has quickly shown serious promise at Pocono. He led 10 laps and finished sixth in the July race last year, and he sat on the pole here earlier this year, leading 25 laps and logging another top-10 finish. The sophomore is showing a great feel for the track’s unique layout, and with Chad Knaus as his crew chief, don’t be surprised if this team tries to work some pit strategy to steal the win.
Sleeper Special
Ryan Newman (200/1)
If I am throwing a dart at a total longshot, Newman at 200/1 is the easy choice. He only has eight top-10s in 2019, but five of those have come in the last six races. Perhaps more importantly, he is one of the best at maintaining track position, and at places where passing is difficult, like Phoenix and New Hampshire, we have seen him steal a few wins over the years. Pocono is another track where track position and clean air can mean everything, and if Newman gets a break that puts him out front late, he won’t be easy to get by.
