2019 NFC North Division Predictions and Odds to Win
1. Chicago Bears(+170 odds at Bovada)
The Bears came out of nowhere last year to go 12-4 and win the NFC North Division under rookie head coach Matt Nagy. Of course, it ended with a sour taste after the Bears gagged at home against the Eagles due to piss poor place kicking. Expectations are sky high heading into this season as Bears fans and players believe they can make the Super Bowl and win it. We aren’t so sure about that but we do like the Bears to win the NFC North Division once again. The Bears had a dominant defense last season that finished 3rd in the NFL in total defense and 1st in scoring. Linebacker Khalil Mack was just what the doctor ordered for the Bears defense and gives them a swagger they haven’t had in years. Look for the defense to once again be arguably the best in the league. Offensively, the Bears will put up plenty of points with Nagy and offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich running the show. The only reservations we have about the Bears getting to the Super Bowl is quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Call us haters but we still aren’t sold on this guy being elite. Time will tell.
2. Green Bay Packers(+190 odds at Bovada)
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been hailed by many as the most talented quarterback in the NFL for years now and some even think he’s the best. However, the guy has quite a few ex-teammates who aren’t big fans and the results haven’t matched all the hype. Rodgers can do it all on the field but apparently many teammates don’t like him and he fails to be a great leader. The Packers canned former head coach Mike McCarthy and have brought in 36 year-old Matt LaFleur to be the new coach. There are already rumors of tension building between Rodgers and LaFleur as Rodgers likes to audible into his own plays and LaFleur is on record stating that his system isn’t built on changing plays. Things could go south in a hurry between these two this season. Having said that, Rodgers is still a stud and should lead the Packers to a winning season if he stays healthy. The problem, like it always has been of late, is the weak sister Packers defense. It will be the reason they fail to do anything in the postseason once again if they even get there.
3. Minnesota Vikings(+240 odds at Bovada)
The Vikings came into last season with high expectations but ended up winning 5 fewer games than year prior and went 8-8. Minnesota signed quarterback Kirk Cousins to a huge free agency deal and figured he would be the long-term answer at qb. We still can’t figure out why. The guy has always been a big game gagger going back to his Redskins days and he continued that last season for the Vikings. Cousins always seems to play the smallest when the games are the biggest. He’s got gag artist in his DNA and that’s just never going to change. Laugh now, cry later. Having said that, the Vikings still have some nice talent on both sides of the ball and will be far from a bad football team. They simply won’t be much better than an average team as long as Cousins is running the show. The good news for Vikings fans is they have a stout defense that finished 4th in the NFL in total defense and 9th in scoring. They will keep the Vikings in many games and give Cousins a chance to win them. Good luck with that.
4. Detroit Lions(+900 odds at Bovada)
The Lions went 6-10 in head coach Matt Patricia’s first season at the helm last year. That was a 3 win drop off from 2017 when the Lions went 9-7. The pressure will be on Patricia to get the Lions out of the NFC North basement and fighting for a Wild Card spot this season. We simply don’t see it. For starters, they have Matt Stafford at quarterback. Sure, we get it, the guy is a gamer and tough as nails. We respect that. However, has there been a quarterback in NFL history who has put up such monster hollow stats as this guy? Who the hell is afraid of a Matthew Stafford led offense in the final minutes of a game? Is any team afraid of a Matthew Stafford led offense coming into their stadium for a big game late in the season? Please. We just don’t get the love affair with this guy. He’s the classic quarterback that’s good enough to tease you but never good enough to actually deliver the goods when it counts. Meanwhile, defensively, the Lions opened up the check book to sign former New England defensive lineman Trey Flowers to a monster deal. Why? He’s a very good player but far from elite. He’s not a Aaron Donald, Khalil Mack or Von Miller that’s going to be a one man wrecking crew. We don’t expect the Lions defense to be much improved because of that guy. We can tell you that.
