2012 Great Clips 200 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Favorites and Sleepers at Phoenix

2012 Great Clips 200 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Great Clips 200 Favorites and Sleepers to Win at the Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Arizona: The 2012 Nationwide season is coming to a close, and the stars are coming out in full force for the second-to-last race of the year this weekend at Phoenix International Raceway. Six big name Cup drivers will be in the field, including three drivers that are in the Chase. Meanwhile, two drivers are tied for the lead in the Nationwide standings. Needless to say, there should be plenty of excitement Saturday at PIR.

Auto Racing

Last fall, Sam Hornish Jr. put several years’ worth of struggles behind him and validated his stock car skills by notching his first-ever win at Phoenix. After pole-sitter Aric Almirola dominated the first part of the race, eventual series champ Ricky Stenhouse Jr. took his turn at the front. However, Hornish’s car came to life during the second half of the race, and he was able to hold off his Penske Racing teammate Brad Keselowski to notch the win.

Earlier this year, Cup regulars Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin controlled most of the action, combining to lead 163 of the 200 laps. However, tire strategy shuffled the running order, and neither Harvick nor Hamlin was a factor for the win. Instead, Elliott Sadler used the clean air he gained on the final round of stops to drive away from the field and steal the win.

The Favorites

Fresh off his second win of the season last weekend at Texas, Kevin Harvick could keep the victories coming at Phoenix. He has finished in the top 10 in his last 14 starts at the track and has 13 top-five finishes during the stretch, including nine straight. Harvick may only have one win at PIR during the stretch, but he is near the front whenever he gets behind the wheel at the track and is always in the mix for a victory.

He has been unable to get to Victory Lane in 2012 in the Nationwide Series, but Kyle Busch will have another golden opportunity to end the drought this weekend. He has finished in the top 12 in 11 of his 13 starts, and more importantly, he is a four-time winner at the track. No driver in the field has more wins at Phoenix than Busch, and he is more than capable of adding to his total Saturday.

Although he has never won at Phoenix, Brad Keselowski has been on the doorstep of a victory for the last several years. He has finished in the top five in six of his last seven starts at the track and has finished second in each of the last two races. It is only a matter of time before Keselowski gets the monkey off his back, and it will likely happen sooner rather than later.

The Dark Horses

In five starts at Phoenix, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has five top-10 finishes and has compiled a 6.6 average finish. More importantly, he has progressively gotten better in every start at the track. After opening his career with back-to-back ninth-place finishes at PIR, Stenhouse has finished seventh, fifth and third in his last three starts. If the trend continues, it won’t be long before he is celebrating a win at the track.

After posting mediocre numbers at Phoenix throughout his career, Elliott Sadler came out of nowhere to win at the track in March. Whether the victory was a fluke or a sign of things to come remains to be seen, but he can’t be written off. It will be tough for Sadler to complete the seasons sweep while facing such a loaded field, there is a chance lightning could strike twice.

Sleeper Special

Former Nationwide Series champ Brian Vickers has landed a ride with Joe Gibbs Racing this weekend, and the end result could be something special. Vickers has finished as high as third at Phoenix in his career, and JGR fields some of the best cars in the series. Putting a talented driver behind the wheel of some excellent equipment has always been a recipe for success.

Big Name to Avoid

Despite being a winner at Phoenix in the Cup Series, Kasey Kahne hasn’t come close to replicating the success in the Nationwide Series. In fact, he has gone 10 straight starts at Phoenix without even cracking the top 10. Kahne has just two top-15 finishes during the stretch, and it is very unlikely that he will find a way to win Saturday when a top-10 has been out of his reach for so long.
