2012 TUMS Fast Relief 500 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Favorites and Sleepers at Martinsville

2012 TUMS Fast Relief 500 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – TUMS Fast Relief 500 Favorites and Sleepers to Win at the Martinsville Speedway in Ridgeway, Virginia: For the final time in 2012, the Cup Series visits a short track. Martinsville Speedway will play host to the short track finale, and the flat, paperclip-shaped track is the shortest and slowest on the schedule. That being said, the half-mile oval packs a punch, and the track has produced some exciting finishes in recent years.

Last fall, Kyle Busch and the Hendrick Motorsports duo of Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson dominated most of the race. The three combined to lead 300 of the 500 laps with Busch leading a race-high 126. However, a late wreck knocked Busch out of contention, setting up what seemed like a showdown between Gordon and Johnson. Tony Stewart had another ideas, and he worked his way into second place for the final restart and then passed Johnson on the outside coming to the white flag to pull off the surprise win.

Earlier this year, Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson were back at it, combining to lead 440 of the 515 laps with Gordon leading an incredible 329. However, an ill-advised three-wide pass attempt for the lead by Clint Bowyer late in the race sent all three cars into the wall, knocking them out of contention and setting up one final restart. Ryan Newman, who inherited the lead after the three frontrunners wrecked, then held off A.J. Allmendinger for his first career Martinsville win.

The Favorites – 2012 TUMS Fast Relief 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Whenever the series heads to Martinsville, Jimmie Johnson is pretty much a lock to be contending for the win. He is a six-time winner at the track, and he has finished third or better in 11 of his 21 career starts. Johnson hasn’t finished outside the top 12 at the track since his rookie year, and he has been so dominant that is almost a surprise when he doesn’t win. He is that good at Martinsville.

Since the start of the 2008 season, no driver has won more races at Martinsville than Denny Hamlin. In addition to his four wins, he has finished 12th or better in his last 12 starts at the track. During the stretch, Hamlin has finished sixth or better 11 times. His 6.4 average finish at the track is the second best among drivers, and he has proven time and time again that he can get to Victory Lane at Martinsville.

The Dark Horses – 2012 TUMS Fast Relief 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

His seven wins at Martinsville are the most among active drivers, and just because Jeff Gordon’s most recent win came in 2005, doesn’t mean he has been struggling. In fact, he has finished in the top five in 13 of his last 15 starts. Last season, Gordon led a combined 442 laps in the two races at Martinsville but couldn’t seal the deal. As long as he keeps running up front, it is only a matter of time before he gets back to Victory Lane.

After missing two races with a concussion, Dale Earnhardt Jr. could return in a big way this weekend. In his last four starts at Martinsville, he has compiled a 4.8 average finish and has finished seventh or better in all four starts. Junior finished third at Martinsville earlier this year, and his 10.6 average finish at the track is the best of any driver without a win. He has been running too well at Martinsville not to snap the winless drought in the near future.

Sleeper Special

He has been quietly having a solid Chase, and things could get even better for Martin Truex Jr. this weekend. He finished eighth at the track last fall, and he followed it up with a fifth-place finish earlier this year. Truex is also coming off a second-place effort at Kansas last weekend, and he could ride the momentum to his first Cup win since 2007.

Big Name to Avoid – 2012 TUMS Fast Relief 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

There are a lot of tracks where Greg Biffle can contend for the win, but Martinsville isn’t one of them. In 19 career starts at the paperclip-shaped oval, he has managed just two top-10 finishes to go along with a 21.9 average finish. Worse yet, he has never finished in the top five at the track while finishing 25th or worse on eight different occasions.
